Sleepless in Seattle

Sleepless in Seattle is the second of three movies that star Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan (after You’ve Got Mail (1998) and Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)). Regarded by many as one of the greatest romantic comedies of all time, Sleepless In Seattle is a movie that always can put you in a good mood. Released in 1993 and brought to us by the incredible Nora Ephron, for those who have already seen this, you do not need me to tell you it is a real classic.

The Movie Review

This is Tom Hanks before he was always trying to win an Oscar. Hey, I love Tom Hanks and think he is one of the greatest actors of all time. However, there is no denying that there came a time when he transitioned away from the kind of movies that he made in the 80s and 90s and started to do far more dramatic and demanding roles. Again, not hating at all, I am a huge fan.

Sam and Jonah’s New Start

Anyway, Tom Hanks plays the role of a man called, Sam. Sam has just lost his wife and he and his eight-year-old son Jonah move to Seattle for a fresh start. Tom Hanks as Sam is impossible not to love. He is so likable, but he also plays this role with a bit of sadness and loneliness. Jonah wants his dad to be happy and tries to play matchmaker.

The Radio Show

Jonah calls a radio station and ends up getting Sam on the air and Sam talks about himself, his late wife, and so on. People all over the country hear Sam on the radio and many women fall for him, including Meg Ryan’s Annie who is a reporter for the Baltimore Sun and she is engaged to a man, but there is no spark here at all.

Annie’s Letter

Like many other women do, Annie falls for Sam when she hears his story. Annie ends up writing a letter to Sam where she says that they should meet on top of the Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day. Annie thinks that the letter is a bad idea and decides against sending it, but one of her friends mails it in and Jonah reads it and thinks that she is the woman that her dad needs, but Sam is not sold on the idea.

Chance Meetings and The Ending

From here we get a few chance meetings between Sam and Annie and it all leads up to one of the greatest ending sequences in romantic comedy history! This is such a great and fun movie. Sleepless in Seattle is also quite unique in that our two lovebird protagonists do not spend any real time together until the very end of the movie!

A Must-Have for Rom-Com Fans

If you are a fam of romantic comedies, Sleepless in Seattle is something you have to have in your collection. I picked up Sony’s Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection: Volume 4 purely to get this on 4K as at the time (and I think as of now) it is the only way to get Sleepless in Seattle in 4K and it was well worth it as it looks great in 4K.

Final Thoughts

One last thing before I go, we all know that Sleepless in Seattle is a classic, but I wonder what someone in their early 20s or even teens would think about this movie? Would the concept of the movie even be something that a younger generation would be able to comprehend?
