What more could I possibly say about Squid Game than has already been said? All the hype is real, this is one of the best shows of 2021 and one of the best Netflix Original’s they have done so far. My wife and I were hooked on this show and ended up watching all 9 episodes over three days!

The Movie Review
This is the kind of show where you need to know as little as possible going on. It has such a complex and dark story that it legit keeps you hanging on all the way until the end. The basics of what is going on here at first sound “fun”. Many people in South Korea that are having money troubles are giving what at first appears to be a lifeline.
They can win a substantial amount of money by taking part in some of the games that they used to play when they were kids. Sounds fun right? Well, these may be games that they played when they were kids, but they all have a sadistic twist and if they lose, then they also lose their life.
Red Light, Green Light is a game most of us played in some fashion as a kid. In Squid Game, if you move when the giant creepy doll looks at you, you get a bullet between the eyes. This whole scene was very jarring as it let you know this was for real. This scene had my jaw on the floor as the number of contestants got decimated as they started running for their lives.
There are some very interesting characters here and Squid Game is a show that is very character-driven, it is not just all about violence and gore. I would say that the main character is Seong Gi-hun and his life pretty much sucks and he is in desperate need of some cash! He is at risk of never seeing his daughter again and his mother has to look after him like he is a child.
Seong Gi-hun is joined by his childhood friend, Cho Sang-woo who needs money because he stole a load of it from clients and now is in deep trouble. My favorite character is Kang Sae-byeok (played by HoYeon Jung), she is a defector from North Korea. At first, she comes across as the stereotypical tough chick, but she is far deeper than that.
I want to take a moment to talk about how you watch Squid Game. My wife and I watched the dubbed English version (my wife does not do subtitles!) and found the dubbing to be fine. If you do prefer to watch this with the Korean dialogue, but with subtitles make sure that you change them from the default. For some reason the default is English CC, the one you want is English Subtitles, so make sure it is on the right one.
Squid Game is one of those shows where all of the hype behind it is true. Not many TV shows captivate me as this one did and I have had a lot of fun discussing it with others who have also watched it. Right now, this is easily the best TV show that I have seen in 2021!
