The Addams Family is a generational thing where it is like each generation as their own incarnation. I grew up with the movies and the animated series of the 90s as my Addams Family and I really enjoyed it. So, I was very interested when I heard that the series was getting rebooted again with this 2019 CG animated movie.

The Movie Review
The first thing we have to talk about is the cast. Oscar Isaac is Gomez, Charlize Theron as Morticia, Finn Wolfhard is Pugsley, Chloe Grace Moretz as Wednesday, and Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester. Even the support cast is great with Bette Midler, Snoop Dogg, Martin Short, and Catherine o Hara being involved to name a few.
While I loved the casting choices for the movie, when I first saw the trailer, I was unsure of the style of the movie. The thing is, it actually works quite well and these “new” versions of the Addams Family fit in very well and while they “look” a bit different, their personalities are very similar to how you remember them.
The story of the movie is something of a reboot. We get a quick sense of who The Addams Family are which I liked as there are probably a lot of kids who do not know them. Margaux Needler played by Allison Janey is the villain of the movie and she wants rid of The Addams Family from the neighborhood and goes to great lengths to make it happen. The plot is decent enough for a kid’s movie and it does have a few laughs.
As an adult watching it I did like how it would be dark and have a lot of back humor about it. I am sure there were many jokes that kids did not pick up on, but there was more than enough slapstick for them to enjoy also. The plot may not have been the strongest thing tying it all together.
However, the family dynamic is the real star of the show, especially Wednesday discovering the real world outside her family’s kooky mansion. There are some fun horror movie references in here that I got a real kick out of and for the most part I had a fun time watching this movie.
I really do not have any major problems with this movie. It looks good, the voice cast is fantastic and it overall is a lot of fun. It is the kind of movie that is a bit forgettable, but if you are looking for something fun to watch with the kids, you can do a lot worse than this that is for sure.
You will most likely not be wanting to watch this over and over again. I will admit though if in a week or two my son asks to watch this again, I would be upset about the thought of doing so. If you have kids who like things a little darker, I would say this is a movie that is worth checking out.
