Let me start by saying if you do not like Melissa McCarthy, chances are you will not like The Boss. However, if you are a fan of Melissa McCarthy’s brand of humor, The Boss is a movie you will have fun with. As you have probably already guessed, The Boss is a comedy movie and one that is far funnier than people give it credit for. I do not know if people had grown tired of her schtick by the time this came out, but this is actually a lot of fun.

The Movie Review
Melissa McCarthy plays the role of Michelle. Michelle had a rough childhood where she was abandoned at an orphanage and she vowed to become a success. As an adult, Michelle is a business mastermind and one of the richest women in the country. Seeing Melissa McCarthy as this rich arrogant character is very amusing
She has her own kryptonite and that is her former lover Renault. Renault is played by Peter Dinklage and he and Melissa McCarthy have great chemistry together. Renault basically sets her up and she admits live on TV to doing insider trading and this gets her thrown in jail for several months.
Plot Development and Character Dynamics
Michelle gets out of jail, but she has literally lost everything and had all of her assets frozen. With nowhere to go, Michelle heads to her former assistant, Claire’s house. Claire lives with her young daughter Rachel and she agrees to let Michelle stay with her until she is on her feet. Claire is played by Kristen Bell and I swear that there is no one better at playing a sweet mom like character than Kristen Bell.
Michelle struggles to live like a “normal” person, but she gets some divine inspiration from Claire’s daughter’s Girl Scout cookies sales. Michelle and Claire start a business making and selling sweet treats and all is good in the world…. Sort of! As Michelle and Claire’s business starts to grow they have some obstacles in their path.
Unique Elements and Humor in The Boss
First of all, we get this epic street fight between the Girl Scouts and Michelle that has to be seen to be believed. We also have Michelle’s trauma of not having a family raise its head as she struggles to allow herself to be a family with Claire. Then we have her weird romance/rivalry with Renault.
Emotional Depth and Final Thoughts
One of the most surprising things about The Boss is that it actually does have a lot of heart. I think that Melissa McCarthy does a good job of flipping between being this rich mean lady and a woman who just wants a family and to be loved and accepted. Although it is a predictable movie, that does not mean it is not a fun one.
If you have for some reason held off on watching The Boss, I say give it a try! It is a good movie to watch if you are in the mood for something funny with a bit of heart. You do not have to think too hard to pay super close attention to what is going on to have fun with this movie.
