The Chosen is a Christian TV series about the life of Jesus and the people who followed him. I know that some people see “Christian TV” or Christian movie and think that it is not for them. To be fair, I watched quite a few faith-based movies as of late and while this is a TV series, it is one of the better ones and one of the more interesting dramatizations of the life of Jesus.
How to Download The Chosen
You can stream the film from a digital platform. We didn’t see an option to download it via the free The Chosen app but streaming from it to a TV is a great option. Click on the Download button at the end of this review and make your choice. If you are interested in movies about Jesus, check out also The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), The Passion of the Christ (2004), and Son of God (2014).
The Movie Review
Before we get into what the show is about, I have to talk about the way this thing came about. The Chosen was created by Dallas Jenkins and it was funded mainly through crowdfunding. It is actually one of the most successful crowdfunding media projects of all time. You can watch it for free on the web, but they have also partnered with different streaming sites as well.
You can still throw them a few bucks if you want to help fund further seasons, but you are under no obligation to do so in order to watch the show. I think that this is a very interesting way to fund a show and it makes discussing the making of The Chosen just as interesting as the show itself.
The first season of the show sets the stage for what is to come. Jesus is living in Galilei in the first century and he is starting to put together his ministry. Jesus performs miracles that many of us are familiar with and this leads to people wanting to follow him and help him spread his word.
One of the things that I liked about The Chosen, especially the first season was that it was so focused on his followers as well as Jesus. Mary Magdeline, Simon the fisherman, the singer little James, and more. You get to spend a bit of time with each character and I think it made for some interesting storytelling. The first season is all about Jesus setting up his ministry and starting to spread the word.
The second season of The Chosen is about Jesus and his followers heading out into the world to spread their message and for Jesus to perform more miracles. It is ultimately about the Sermon on the Mount and the trials and tribulations that he and his followers had getting there. I have to be honest and say that I felt that the second season was not quite as good as the first one. Again, it was character-driven, but it just was not as interesting to me.
The Chosen got a third season and this time around, trouble is starting to brew. Jesus and his followers are still trying to spread their message and perform the odd miracle here and there. However, with Jesus becoming more and more popular opposing forces start to rise such as the Romans and the Pharisees. One thing I liked about the third season was Jesus sending out his followers in pairs to perform miracles without him!
I know that this being marketed as a Christian show may make it a hard pass for some people, but it honestly is not as preachy as you may think. I found it to be pretty interesting, especially the first and third seasons of the show and if it does indeed get the funding for a fourth season, I will probably check it out.
