As someone who likes sci-fi and is a big fan of Gareth Edwards’s work, I was sure that at the very least I would like The Creator. When the credits started to roll I looked at my wife and said “That was awesome” all excited and giddy. She hit me back with a “eh, it was ok” and I think that best sums up the reaction I am seeing to this movie. I think if you dig sci-fi, you are going to have a lot of fun with this.

The Movie Review
I have to say that they really struck gold with the timing of this movie. AI is huge right now and it is only going to get bigger. Yes, we have had a ton of movies that deal with the dangers of artificial inelegance over the years and this does follow many of those same tropes. However, this is a Gareth Edwards movie, and with that comes compelling characters and fantastic world-building.

The Premise
The premise of the movie is about a war that AI is at the center of. LA is nuked by AI and this leads the West who oppose AI to be at war with those in the East who are embracing AI. It never really gets super deep with this stuff if I am honest, however, I think they do a great job of explaining why the people at war are at odds with each other.
The Main Character
Our main character is called Joshua (John David Washington) and he is a badass soldier who is tasked with heading into enemy territory and taking care of a new weapon. It has been said that the AI has a war-ending weapon that will destroy humanity and of course, we cannot have that now can we?
Joshua’s Mission
Joshua is on his special mission to neutralize whatever this new weapon may be and he is shocked when it is revealed to be a child. Granted this is some weird AI/human-like child hybrid, but he takes a liking to the child who is referred to as Alphie, and the two find themselves on the run and fighting for survival.
Impressive World-Building
I have to say that The Creator does have vibes similar to stuff like Logan and The Last of Us and I mean that as a compliment. The world that Gareth Edwards has built here feels real, interesting, and horrifying and he did it all with a rather modest budget. I was kind of stunned when I read that the budget for this was under 100 million as it has some amazing CGI, better than movies that have over double the budget.
Outstanding Performances
While this movie looks and sounds amazing, what really drives it for me is the characters. John David Washington is a fantastic actor, just like his father. However, young Madeleine Yuna Voyles who plays Alphie is amazing, it is crazy to think that this is her first-ever role! The supporting cast is great too with the likes of Gemma Chan and Allison Janey who is amazing as what is pretty much the movie’s villain.
Worth the Watch
I know that The Creator is coming out at a rather busy time with other big movies in the theatre as well as new movies and TV shows on streaming services, but it is well worth making the effort to see. Fans of sci-fi have to go and see this on the big screen! I may go and see this one again if I have the time!
