I had been meaning to get around to watching The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie for a while, as I loved Looney Tunes growing up. Actually, I loved the 2011 Looney Tunes Show, too, which was more of a sitcom with Bugs and Daffy living together, but this movie was going for a more classic vibe, and that was something that interested me a great deal.

The Movie Review
This is brought to us by first-time director, Pete Browngardte who actually worked on the Looney Tunes show. This is like a blending of the classic and wacky antics of the Looney Tunes along with an old school sci-fi B movie. I had a fun time with this and thought that it was a great return for the Looney Tunes. I also liked how it was a very focused kind of movie.
Daffy Duck and Porky Pig Take Center Stage
They do not just throw in a ton of Looney Tunes characters for the sake of it. This is a Daffy Duck and Porky Pig movie firstly and then we have Petunia Pig also playing a major role. Daffy Duck is by far my favorite Looney Tunes character, and he and Porky Pig have so much awesome chemistry together.
A Classic Sci-Fi Opening
The movie starts with a very classic sci-fi trope: a meteor is heading to Earth, and when something crashes to Earth before it, a scientist is captured and turned into a zombie. I thought that this was such a fun way to start the movie, and it gives you an idea of the main plot right from the start, however, it is the scene that comes after this that I adored.
Childhood Flashbacks and Emo Teen Daffy
We get to see a very young Porky Pig and Daffy Duck. Little Porky and Daffy are adopted by Big Farmer Jim, who takes them in and teaches them the way of the world. This montage of them growing up was so much fun, and I got a massive kick and I legit laughed out loud when we saw emo teen Daffy Duck. Eventually, Farmer Jim goes up into the big farm in the sky, but he tells his boys that as long as they look after each other, they will be ok.
Wacky Job Fails and Comedy Gold
Well, things do not go smoothly as they fail a house inspection and need to make money to repair the roof, or they will lose the house. This leads to Daffy and Porky getting all kinds of jobs, all of which Daffy gets them fired from. This is another montage style scene and seeing all the crazy ways that Daffy screws up and gets them fired was another thing that got a legit laugh out of me.
Petunia Pig and Zombie Gum Trouble
It is here that Porky meets Petunia Pig and he pretty much falls in love with her right away. Petunia works at the gum factory and is looking for the perfect flavor, and she manages to get Daffy and Porky a job working there with her. While Porky is trying his best to impress Petunia as he likes her, Daffy comes across the zombie scientist who is contaminating the gum, which then turns everyone into zombies!
A Twist and Classic B-Movie Vibes
No spoilers here, but we basically have Porky, Petunia, and Daffy needing to save the world, but all is not what it seems, and I thought that the twist of what the gum was really for was cool. This is the kind of movie that has all of the classic and wacky antics of the Looney Tunes that you know and love, but it also has many of the classic sci-fi elements that those cheesy B-movies had as well. They blend together really well and the movie just flew by for me as I was having so much fun with it.
The Physical Release and Final Thoughts
While I watched The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, I have learned that this is getting a physical release in 2025, and I do intend to pick it up. This is a fun animated movie that fans of Looney Tunes will like, fans of classic sci-fi will like and I actually think it would be the perfect movie for a family movie night.
