The Midnight Sky

I am pretty pumped to talk to you about The Midnight Sky today as it is a movie I really liked. This is a Netflix original that was released late in 2020 and it is one of the more underrated movies, that Netflix has been associated with. It is a sci-fi movie that I feel keeps you invested the whole time you are watching it.

The Movie Review

At the time I watched The Midnight Sky, I had no idea that it was actually based on a book called, Good Morning Midnight that was released in 2015. It was directed by George Clooney, who is also the movies star and I have to say that I feel George Clooney just gets better with age when it comes to his acting performances and if you ask my wife, he gets more handsome too!

The story of the movie is about a brilliant scientist called, Augustine Lofthouse that is played by George Clooney. Lofthouse’s specialty is finding planets that may be habitable for mankind. He is a man that is all about his work and nothing else in his life is more important than that!

He is so consumed by his work that it costs him his relationship as well as getting to know his daughter. Years pass and there has been an extinction-level event on Earth and now Lofthouse lives alone in a research base in the arctic. He is all alone and he is dying from an illness that he has the medical equipment for on the base to prolong his life.

What is ultimately keeping him going is that he is monitoring the skies for any spacecraft that may be returning to Earth and he wants to warn them about the uninhabitable state of Earth. It is a noble mission when you think about it that he is going to spend his dying days trying to keep others away from coming to a planet that is dying.

Now, a spacecraft is coming back to Earth after a mission to one of Jupiter’s moons. However, their communications equipment is damaged so Lofthouse cannot reach them! Making things even more strained is the appearance of a little girl called Iris whom he takes a liking to. Ultimately, he wants to find a way to communicate with the shuttle to warn them not to come to Earth.

You may be surprised to hear this, but The Midnight Sky actually has some great twists and turns in the story. I was all in on this when I just thought that it was a sci-fi movie, but it actually has a lot of depth and some real emotional weight to the way the story unfolds that gets to you even more.

While George Clooney carries the weight of the movie. I have to say that the other performances from those on the spacecraft, the little girl, and in the flashback-style scenes too are all fantastic. It is one of those movies that had me from the moment it started and I was so interested to see what would happen to Lofthouse and the people on the space shuttle.

As you can tell, The Midnight Sky is a movie I truly did enjoy. It is one of the better sci-fi movies that Netflix has done and if you like sci-fi that is not just action and aliens, you will enjoy this. I will say that I watched this when it first came onto Netflix, but it is the kind of movie where I feel I need to leave it for quite a few years before watching it again.
