Today we are looking at a movie from 2015, The Perfect Guy. The wife and I were looking for a thriller we had never seen and this one popped up so we gave it a chance. To be fair, this is not a bad movie at all, but it is a movie that you feel like you have seen a million times before, it has a very “Fatal Attraction” thing going on which I like, but this movie takes that premise and plays it very safe.
How to Download The Perfect Guy
The Perfect Guy was released on September 11, 2015. You can download or stream the film from a digital platform. Click on the Download button at the end of this review and make your choice. If you like romantic thrillers, you also need to check out Fifty Shades of Grey and Where the Crawdads Sing.
The Movie Review
Our main character is a very attractive woman called Leah. Leah breaks up with her boyfriend, Dave because Dave is not willing to commit the way she likes. This goes down in the first ten or so minutes of the movie and that brings me to my first issue with the movie and that is the pacing.
Issues with Time Perception
The Perfect Guy is really bad at giving you an idea of how much time has passed. It feels like she just broke up with Dave and she meets a guy in a bar called Carter and they bang in the bathroom and are an item! If you have seen any of the other million movies that have a formula like this you know exactly where it is going!
Carter’s True Colors
Carter seems like the “perfect guy” and he manages to impress her family and friends and everyone loves him. However, Carter shows his true colors when he flips out in front of Leah and she dumps him as a result. I do think that when we see that first bit of aggression from Carter, it is very well done and you know right there and then that he is a psycho.
Stalking and Detective Hanson
After she dumps him, Carter starts to stalk Leah, leaving her messages, breaking into her house, and just causing her tons of stress. Leah gets in touch with the cops and I liked how the lead cop Detective Hanson believes her and tries to help her with this, but despite knowing Carter is a bad guy, his hands are tied due to a lack of evidence.
Predictable Plot
Following the same formula that all these movies have, Leah realizes that she will have to stand up to Carter if she wants rid of him! How many movies have you seen where the seemingly normal and perfect guy (or sometimes woman) turns out to be a total psycho? That is pretty much what we have here, it is not bad, but it does nothing to make it stand out or be memorable in any way.
Pacing Concerns
I talked about the pacing and what I mean by that is the movie feels like it all happens very quickly, but I think that many months are supposed to have passed. The quick pace of the movie I guess does make it a bit more exciting, but they could have clarified how much time had passed between events better.
Once the movie ended, I looked at my wife and we both said, “that was ok”. Ok is the best way to describe this movie. It is certainly not bad, but at the same time, I would not say it is good either. I have seen better movies like this, but I have also seen way worse too. If you are really stuck for something to watch and you want a decent thriller, you can do way worse than this.
