The Sea Beast

Brought to us by Chris Williams who also directed Moana and Big Hero 6, The Sea Beast Is a Netflix original animated movie that may be predictable, but it also has a lot of heart and is a fun family adventure movie. I went into this thinking it was going to be decent, but it ended up being far more entertaining than I imagined it would.

The Movie Review

In the world that The Sea Beast takes place, sea monsters for generations have been causing havoc on the high seas.  We have a ship called The Inevitable. The Inevitable is captained by Captain Crow who along with his first mate Sarah and his adopted son Jacob hunt and capture sea monsters for the king and queen.

There has been one sea monster that has eluded them for a very long time! This sea monster is called, The Red Bluster and it took Captain Crow’s eye. The king and queen have said that The Inevitable is going to be replaced, but they are given one last chance to capture The Red Bluster.

As they head out on their epic journey to capture The Red Bluster a big (well small really) problem arises. A young girl called Maisie has sown away onboard The Inevitable as she has dreams of being a monster hunter, just like her parents were. It does not take too long for her to get into some big trouble and Maisie and Jacob end up being captured by The Red Bluster.

Look, you can see where this story is going a mile away, but to be fair, the movie is still a lot of fun and has a really sweet side to it. I do have to say that the movie is very, very similar to the first How to Train Your Dragon, but that is not necessarily a bad thing as all three of those movies are fantastic.

As far as Netflix’s Original animated movies go, I think that The Sea Beast is the best-looking one that they have done so far. The monster designs are fantastic and the main one, The Red Bluster, reminds me a bit of Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon. The whole movie looks amazing and I would say it is the closest I have seen a Netflix Original animated movie come to matching what Disney and Pixar do.

One of the main reasons that I was drawn to this movie was Karl Urban playing the role of Jacob. It is very funny to hear Karl Urban play a role in a “kids” movie after hearing him drop the F and C bomb every five seconds in The Boys season 3! As well as Karl Urban, Dan Stevens, Jared Harris, Marie-Ann Baptiste, and Zaris-Angel Hator are the other notable actors lending their voices to the movie.

I had a blast with The Sea Beast. I think this is a movie that has a ton of fun action, but it also has a lot of heart as well. It is the perfect movie for a family movie night and it is something that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. I am writing this the day after seeing it, but I have a feeling this could be a movie that when I do eventually revisit it, I like even more the second time around.
