The Boys (TV series)

I am pretty pumped to be talking to you guys about the Amazon Prime TV series, The Boys. The Boys is my favorite of all the Amazon Prime shows so far! This is based on the brutal and epic comic book series of the same name. While there are more than a few changes from the comic book, this is still one of the best comic books to TV series adaptations we have had so far.

The Movie Review

The series was brought to us by Eric Kripke, who you may know from the excellent Supernatural. The series has a tremendous ensemble cast that I am reluctant to dive too deep into for fear of missing someone, that is how many talented people are part of this show! My two favorites though are Karl Urban as Butcher and Antony Starr as Homelander.

The basics of the plot are that we live in a world where superheroes are the norm. The main group of superheroes is called The Seven. The Seven are led by the All-American “good guy” Homelander. The Seven are actually part of a massive corporation that rakes in a ton of money and basically controls the people through their superheroes.

The thing is, The Seven are a group of superheroes that are not as clean-cut and wholesome as they seem. The majority of them abuse their powers and Homelander is a freaking psychopath! Things come to a head when our main protagonist, Hughie, sees his fiancé brutally destroyed by one of The Seven, A-Train.

This was an accident, but the complete lack of care, accountability, or punishment drives Hughie to the brink. This brings Hughie to his absolute limit and he ends up coming across Butcher and they along with a few others, form a team of vigilantes that vow to take The Seven down!

There is so much drama in The Boys that what I have just given you is a very simplified version of the main plot. There is a fantastic love story with Hughie falling for a superhero in Starlight, who then works with them to try and bring The Seven down from the inside. There is a story with Butcher’s wife and so much more.

I will say that The Boys is not for those of you who have a weak stomach or who are easily offended. This show is brutal, but that is meant as a compliment. The amount of blood, violence, sex, and more is pretty damn awesome. I do not think Butcher can say a sentence without at least one F-bomb.

Speaking of Butcher, this is an absolute career performance from Karl Urban. So much so that no matter what he is in after his time with The Boys is done, I will think of him as Butcher. The cast is just so talented here that I would be doing it a disservice to try and shoehorn in everyone into this review.

Currently, The Boys has two seasons on Amazon Prime. As of writing, season three of The Boys is nearly here and I could not be any more excited for it! While this may seem like another superhero TV show it is far more than that. Even someone who does not like superheroes will be able to enjoy what The Boys is offering. Amazon Prime has made some great original content, but this sits at the very top!
