With its all star live action and voice cast, The Sheep Detectives was one of those movies I just could not find the time to go and see. I was shocked when it showed up on Amazon Prime so quickly after its theatrical run, and it was being classed as an Amazon Prime Original. I did not see this coming, but it made me very excited to watch the movie. Even more so when I realized that the new He-Man, Nicholas Galitzine, was in the movie.

The Movie Review
High Potential & Star-Studded Cast
It really sucks, I never managed to get to see this in the theatre. I knew that this was a comedy whodunnit kind of movie, and the trailers made it look like a ton of fun. Plus with a cast featuring the likes of Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, and the voice acting of the likes of Julia Louis Dreyfus, Sir Patrick Stewart, and Brian Cranston to name just a few. I knew that this was a movie that had a ton of potential.
Premise: A Shepherd & His Mystery-Loving Sheep
Hugh Jackman plays the role of a sheep herder called George. George loves to read murder mystery novels to his sheep, and the sheep love it, especially Lily, the smartest of the sheep. Lily is always able to figure out what has happened in the story before it is finished. It is so much fun seeing the sheep try to work out what is going on in the story.
The Inciting Incident & Ovine Investigators
Life is good, but then one night, Lily and the rest of her sheep are thrust into a murder mystery of their own as George is murdered! Being devastated by the loss of George, Lily decides that she is going to have to be the one to try and solve the murder as the local lawman, Officer Derry, is massively out of his depth, but despite this, it is impossible not to love Officer Derry as he clearly has a heart of gold and wants to get to the bottom of this.
Suspects & Classic Whodunnit Tropes
Now, like any good whodunnit, there are many moving pieces here. There is a rival sheep herder, a mysterious innkeeper, a butcher, a young reporter looking for his big break and there is also George’s estranged daughter, whom he has recently got into contact with. Of course, I am not going to go into spoilers with a movie like this, but it does keep you guessing.
Ovine Sleuths & A Surprising Climax
I will tell you that the fun twist here is that Lily and another sheep called Mopple lead the charge in trying to not just crack the case, but help push Officer Derry in the right direction. I was legit surprised by who the culprit was, and by the time the movie came to a close, I had a smile on my face, and I had had a fantastic time watching it.
Final Recommendation
I will say that, like most other whodunnit and murder mystery movies, The Sheep Detective is the kind of movie that may not hold the same kind of appeal on a repeat viewing. However, one advantage this does have over other whodunnit movies is the fun and awesome gimmick of the talking sheep. I highly recommend giving this a try; it is perfect for a home movie night now that it is on Amazon Prime.
