With The Substance being the mainstream hit of a body horror movie in 2024, Together is aiming to be THE body horror movie of 2025. This is brought to us by first-time director Michael Shanks, and let me tell you, whatever this dude does next, I will be sure to check it out, as I loved Together.
Where to Watch Together
Together was released on July 30, 2025. You can stream the film from a digital platforms – Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
A Deep Dive into Together: The Movie Review
Now, while I loved Together, I can see this being a movie that people either love or think is just too weird. My wife and I tend to have pretty similar tastes with movies, but while I liked this, she did not like it at all and found it just too weird. This is a movie that is going to lead to a lot of discussions, as those who like it appear to really like and those who do not, really do not like it.
Dave Franco and Alison Brie Deliver Standout Performances
The cast was a major reason I wanted to see this. We have a great main cast here with real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie, leading the charge as Mille and Tim. By the way, off topic, but I cannot wait to see 2026’s Masters of the Universe movie with Alison Brie playing Evil-Lynn, that is perfect casting and I am sure she will do an amazing job in this iconic role.
The Premise: A Surreal Descent into Transformation
Millie is a teacher, and she has just taken a new job in a rather remote town. Millie, along with her musician boyfriend Tim, is relocating to this rural area. While out on a walk, they fall into a strange cage, and Tim ends up drinking the water that is in there. Why the heck would he think to drink dirty cave water…. I am still not 100 percent sure, but this is not normal water.
What Makes Together So Unique?
The trailer gives away the gimmick of Together. Tim and Millie basically have a real urge that seems them pulled together and physically joined together. I thought that this was a good premise going into the movie. However, the explanation for the reason why this is happening to them is great and honestly something that I would love to see expanded upon in some kind of sequel to this.
Strong Storytelling and Effective Body Horror
For such a strange premise, I think that the story does more than enough to make it all make sense, even if it is freaking weird. The body horror stuff here is really well done. I am not sure I would say it reaches the heights of the Substance, but it is still creepy as hell, and my wife literally said “that is gross” on a couple of occasions. So that tells you the special effects department nailed this.
Horror with a Dash of Dark Humor
This was one of those movies that, as soon as I saw the trailer and saw the cast, I knew I was all in, so I read as little as I could about it. However, my theatre had it listed as horror and comedy, and I noticed a few other places had comedy listed as one of the genres for this as well. There are some bits of humor here, including a pretty wild and funny for all the wrong reasons sex scene, but the movie never goes over the top with the comedy.
Cult Classic Potential for Together
I had a really fun time with this. Together was a movie I thought I would like, but it ended up being even better than I thought it would be. It seems to be doing ok at the box office, but this is the kind of movie that could build up a real cult following when it hits streaming. At my theatre, Weapons still has multiple showings per day, and The Conjuring: Last Rites is just about to release, so this being sandwiched in between that and still doing ok is pretty impressive.
