I was and still am a huge Will Smith fan. I grew up on his rap albums and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and when The Fresh Prince started making big budget movies like Independence Day and Men in Black, I thought it was awesome. We all have guilty pleasure movies, movies that bombed or have a bad reputation, but we love them anyway, and for me, Wild Wild West is one of those movies. Actually, scratch that, I feel no guilt as I always have a fun time when I watch this.

The Movie Review
While this was critically panned, and it also was not successful at the box office due to the massive budget the movie had, seriously, this was one of the most expensive movies ever made! There was a lot of hype for Wild Wild West before it was released, the theme song by Will Smith was so damn catchy and is probably what most people remember when they think of Wild Wild West. I get the impression the studio thought that this was going to be as huge as Men in Black, but that, of course, was not the case.
The Star-Studded Cast Behind Wild Wild West
This is known as a Will Smith movie, but this movie has a great cast. Kevin Kline pulls double duty as he plays Artemus Gordon, a U.S. goverment agent who works with Will Smith’s James West. Kline also plays the role of the US President, Ulysses S Grant. Salama Hyak also has a major role and the villain is a legless madman obsessed with technology called Dr Loveless and he is played by Kenneth Brannagh.
Western Action and Steampunk Style in Wild Wild West
Wild Wild West is a fun Western style action movie. Dr. Loveless has been kidnapping scientists and James West and Artemus Gordon need to find out what is going on and stop it. Salma Hayek (From Dusk till Dawn, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard) plays the role of a woman called Rita, and her father is one of the people that Loveless has taken.
Why Wild Wild West Is Still a Fun Watch Today
While the movie is cheesy as hell, Dr Loveless is such a fun and over the top villain. The way he uses steam to power his machines is awesome, and the giant steam powered spider is a major highlight of the movie. For a movie that is over 25 years old as I write this, the special effects hold up pretty well, and the Blu-Ray release of this looks fantastic. Granted, some scenes look a tad dated and clearly CGI, but overall, I love the vibe and style of this movie. The mixing of the old West with a kind of steampunk style works very well.
Don’t Believe the Hate – Wild Wild West Deserves a Watch
People say the plot is dumb, the acting is bad, and that the movie is just generally trash, but I honestly do not see it. I have watched this movie several times over the years, and I watched it again recently, and I still think that it is fun. Is this some kind of cinematic masterpiece? Absolutely not, but it’s still a fun popcorn movie where you can just turn your brain off and have a good time.
If you have never seen Wild Wild West and have been put off by the terrible reputation it has, give it a try, you never know, you might like it! I have seen way worse movies than this, and in my personal opinion, I really do not think that all the hate and criticism this movie gets is warranted. Even with how badly this did at the box office and with the professional reviewers, Will Smith would go on to way bigger things, arguably becoming the biggest movie star on the planet in the coming years.
