Zack Snyder’s Justice League or if you prefer, “The Snyder Cut” has so far been one of 2021’s most talked-about movies. It was one of the first huge movies to debut on the HBO Max service and it was a movie I was very interested in checking out. Full, disclosure here, I did not actually think the first cut was as horrible as people made out!

The Movie Review
To start, let’s do a little bit of backstory. The original Justice League movie was released back in 2017, due to a family tragedy, director Zack Snyder had to step down, leaving Joss Whedon to finish things up. This has been a huge source of controversy from many things being cut from the movie to workplace bullying!
The movie was far from the massive success that Warner Bros had hoped for and fans were calling for WB to let Zack Snyder come back and truly show his vision. Well, with a ton of extra money and some newly shot scenes that is exactly what happened, and today we are looking at the end result.
I will start by saying that Zack Snyder’s Justice League is better than the theatrical cut we got a few years back. For the most part, the overall plot of the movie is the same, but things are deeper. For example. Steppenwolf is no longer just a one-dimensional bad guy; you get more of his backstory and why he is so desperate to appease Darkseid.
Speaking of Darkseid, he actually has a role in this movie and it was awesome to see him as the big overseeing of the DCEU. Sadly, we will probably never get this expanded on, but I take seeing Darkseid here in this movie as a big win. There was more character development for The Flash and Cyborg too.
The Flash since I watched the 1990 TV series has been one of my favorite comic book characters. I am greatly attached to the Grant Gustin version on TV and I have to say that Ezra Miller just feels meh in the role of The Flash. Even with the extra development and the “speed force” being in this movie, I find Flash the weakest part of the team.
Cyborg on the other hand is handled very, very well. It was Ray Fisher who spoke out about the way things were on the original cut of the movie and it was great to see his story explained more in the Snyder Cut. I think Cyborg was done more justice here in this movie and he felt more like a fully-rounded character.
Much of what happens with Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman is improved too. By far my favorite part of the movie was The Nightmare scene, with The Joker, and just having this extended was really, really cool. I would love to have seen Zack Snyder be allowed to make a full movie in this universe. I would go as far as to say this is one of my favorite parts of any DC movie!
I have to give WB a ton of credit for how they went all-in on this. The special effects are much improved. This ranges from Superman’s terrible lip CG to the way Steppenwolf looks. They truly went back in with the best of intentions here and as a result, the movie looks far better for it.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League clocks in at a tad over four hours. I ended up watching the movie in two parts and I feel this is the best way to do it. As entertaining as it is, I feel sitting through a movie for four hours is a big ask and I have to say I do not think I would have been as fond of it if I did it this way.
At the end of the day, while this was Zack Snyder’s vision, there was no way in hell, WB was going to release this as a four-hour movie! Still, it is awesome to see them letting him get back in there and truly show his vision. I have to be honest, I thought the DCEU was “okay”. However, after watching this I do wish that they would get this back on track as it would be great to see what happened to Batman and Superman.
