The Song Review
Solo went on to become a commercial success as it managed to top the charts in many countries including Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom. Additionally, Solo also became the most searched song on the popular mobile app called Shazam in 2018.
The song talks about a toxic relationship where the girl is hopelessly addicted to a boy who constantly abuses her in their relationship. Solo is available to play through digital download.
Despite talking about a very disturbing topic, Clean Bandit and Demi make sure that the song is presented in an entertaining manner. The background music is ecstatic, giving vibes of a typical summer anthem.
The lyrics begin with Lovato explaining her regretful decision to leave her partner which she describes, as the worst thing possible she could have done to him. She further confesses that although other boys do take an interest in her, she does not feel as happy or attracted to them.
In the main chorus, Lovato vaguely expresses her desire to have intercourse as part of her rebound but blurs out the word with a tune. Additionally, her feelings of being broken down take shape when she sings about crying because of her broken heart. The chorus goes “I wanna f-woop, woop woop, but I’m broken hearted, cr- cy- cry, but I like to party, t-t-touch, but I got nobody”.
The latter part of the song features a similar pattern in terms of the lyrics and tune pattern. The song mainly describes the internal struggle of a girl who wants to move on but is forced to live in the past consistently by still having feelings for the boy.
The official music video for the song was released on 31st May 2018 and has over 400 million views on YouTube. The video follows the story of Clean Bandit’s band member named Grace Chatto who is featured in a toxic relationship with her lover. The two can be seen arguing until a point reaches where the boy thrashes a flower pot on to the wall. Chatto then grabs her skateboard and goes to a laundromat where she pays an individual to brew up an unknown potion.
The scientists can be seen using animals to determine the shape of the person who will drink the potion. Meanwhile, Chatto traverses around town and eventually collects the potion which she serves to his lover.
The man turns into a rainbow-colored dog who Chatto then leashes and uses him to push her skateboard forward. In between the sequence, Chatto can be seen lying in the sun with her face evaporating suddenly, indicating an orgasm. Lovato also makes her appearance numerous times as she can be seen singing behind the scenes.
Overall, Solo is an entertaining song which lays out a tense issue in an entertaining manner.
