The Song Review
The Swalla Lyrics
Jason Derulo is at a club one late night. He admires the girls who he wishes to taste, which are evident by the lyrics “All you girls in here, if you’re feeling thirsty/ Come on take a sip ’cause you know what I’m servin’, ooh.”
Derulo takes a step forward to talk to a girl doing a shimmy, a move that requires sexually shaking her entire body. The lyrics go, “Shimmy shimmy yay, shimmy yay, shimmy ya. Swalla-la-la.”
As the song continues, we are introduced to a very sexualized verse rapped by Nicki Minaj. There are also a few odd rhymes sung by Ty Dolla $ign. This is the first collaboration of the artists with Derulo since 2010.
Nick Minaj’s verse “I gave these bitches two years, now your time’s up. Bless her heart, she throwing shots, but every line sucks” implies a jab at Remy Ma, a rival. The feud between Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj is not new. It started in 2007. However, Jason Derulo was unaware of the back-and-forth and decided to keep himself separate from it.
The direction of the lyrics was clear from the beginning. Jason wanted a cultural piece that was less serious and more fun. Therefore, the bursts of color in the video represent the Caribbean. The producer, Ricky, brought over some drugs and decided to through around the word Swalla, which resulted in:
Shimmy shimmy yay, shimmy yay, shimmy ya (drank)
Swalla-la-la (drank)
Swalla-la-la (swalla-la-la)
Swalla-la-la
Jason wishes to take the girl out to Beverly Hills to spoil her with branded clothes and expensive food for sexual favors in return. He wants her to only wear red bottom LV heels, which he will upload on Snapchat to show off to the world. “Champagne poppin’, she gon’ swallow that,” with the evening leading them to their bedroom since alcohol will make the day pass faster. The lyrics conclude with Jason Derulo calling his lover “My freaky, freaky gyal who will swalla-la-la.”
The Video
The ice-cream song plays in the background in the music video with Derulo wearing a neon leather jacket with a black outfit underneath. A pink-haired lady rests in his lap. She is followed by more women wearing the same provocative outfit—leather shorts with a bralette. You may recognize two women as Kea Pearce and Kirsten Dodgen from ReQuest Dance Crew.
The women synchronize dancing to the music. The band members are also portrayed by women wearing sparkly short dresses with pink wigs and blue lipstick. Jason Derulo continues to sing, switching positions from woman to woman, implying sexual acts.
The video is over-sexualized with excessive skin on display, tongues out, and provocative dancing. Ty Dolla $ign appears at the two-minute mark, standing next to a woman wearing a bikini top and a thong. At one point, everyone is dancing in their underwear, including Derulo.
Toward the end of the video, Nick Minaj appears wearing chrome reflective eye gear, a two-piece bikini, and leather shoes. She sings her verse with Derulo standing behind her.
Play It in the Hush, Hush
Due to the cussing and subliminal sounds in the music, the song is usually played at drinking clubs or dance parties. If you want to be brave, play it in privacy with your partner by setting the mood with drinks, dim lighting, and a sentimental gift.
