SCUM is a downloadable action survival game developed by Gamepires and Croteam. The game is published by Devolver Digital, uses Unreal Engine 4 and was released on 29th August 2018. SCUM features an environment where players have to survive and battle it out with other players in order to escape from an open-air island-like prison. The game is available to play on Microsoft Windows. As of the time of writing nothing is know about SCUM on PS4 or Xbox One.

There is also a downloadable add-on called Supporter Pack which contains some customization goodies that don’t affect the gameplay but they do make you look cool. The concept of the players being a part of a TV show can be found in the battle royale game – Darwin Project or in the famous Neighbours from Hell and Neighbours from Hell 2 strategy games.
The Game Review
SCUM is one of those open-world games which is only available to play in multiplayer mode. The game features a server system wherein up to 64 players can connect and compete against one another at a time per server. The game takes place on a huge island and is playable from both the first-person and third-person perspectives.
As the fight for survival begins, players start off by settling and finding a safe spot for themselves where they can remove the implants that prevent their character from escaping the island. Each playable character assigned to the players will have four main attributed namely, strength, dexterity, constitution, and intelligence. It is important that players are able to maintain these attributes as it directly affects their character’s in-game performance.
This game emulates lifelike elements that are implied. While the most important task is to survive from other players who are out to murder each other, it is just as vital to keep track of the character’s own abilities. Attached to the four attributes are the characteristics that, if maintained, can help the players keep an edge over others.
These characteristics include eating, drinking, peeing, and even pooping. A monitor attached to the player’s character keeps track of their character’s stats including calories, vitamins, and health. In order to maintain these aspects, it is essential that the players keep their characters healthy by fulfilling their requirements. Another lifelike feature of SCUM is that when players perform physical actions such as urinating and cooking, they leave physical evidence that can be observed by other players.
Moving on to the combat system, there are numerous ways to engage in battle with one another. The primary method is to get hold of a weapon and shoot down the other players. There is a unique range of weapons present within the game including pistols, rifles, snipers, and shotguns.
Players can get a hold of weapons by simply picking them up from the map or scavenging them from other dead competitors. Secondary methods of killing include poisoning their opponent’s food as well as depriving them of getting the basic necessities such as food and water.
Players who take part in the game earn fame points through which, they can purchase various safe zones as well as clone themselves back to life in case they die. Players can either die from being shot by their opponents simply or by diseases such as heart attacks or indigestion that can occur if players become irresponsible of their character’s statistics.
Overall, SCUM is a very hands-on game that features a very intense and realistic gaming experience. The gameplay complexity along with the action that takes place makes the game very addicting to play.
