Gibbous – A Cthulhu Adventure

Before I had played or even seen a screenshot for Gibbous – A Cthulhu Adventure I was sure it was going to be a horror game. Well, turns out I could not have been any more wrong. Yes, there are some Lovecraftian elements here, but this is actually a comedy and a damn fine one too.

The Game Review

The first thing that you notice about this game is the visuals. I am going as far as to say that this is one of the best-looking games of 2019! They have gone for a kind of Monkey Island style, but it legit looks like an animated movie come to life. In still pictures Gibbous – A Cthulhu Adventure looks great, but it also has some fantastic animation too.

For me, this is a game where the actual “game” looks just as good as the cut scenes. The story of the game is a lot of fun and revolves at first around a detective who is looking for a Necronomicon and in general, it is a story with a lot of mystery and with many twists and turns. The game actually has three protagonists.

What is great about this is that I could not pick a favorite. You have the “master detective” Don R. Ketype, a librarian called Buzz and a sarcastic talking cat called Kitteh. It is a great mix of characters and you do actually care about them all as you play. The humor is fantastic, even if the story does go a little off the rails by the end of the game.

As far as the actual gameplay goes, I would say that the best way to look at Gibbous – A Cthulhu Adventure is that it is a classic adventure game. I feel that the gameplay has a lot in common with games like Monkey Island and that is a good thing. You go to many different areas, talk to people, solve puzzles and move the story forward.

What I actually like is that this is a rather simple game. Only a couple of times did I really have a hard time figuring out where to go or what item to use. Looking through your inventory though is usually all you have to do to find the right item. Looking around and taking everything in is what will usually put you on the right path.

I can see some hardcore adventure type gamers finding the game rather simple. However, not every game needs to be a cryptic 500-hour journey! This is all about fun and I can hand on heart say that from beginning to end it was a blast to play through. I even feel that people who are not usually into this kind of game will be impressed with the easy to get into the gameplay and fantastic visuals.

Truth be told I really could not be any more impressed with Gibbous – A Cthulhu Adventure. It is a very, very well made game that does not take itself too seriously and is gorgeous to look at too. So far, this is the top of the list for my favorite adventure style game of the year and it is one I highly recommend you take a closer look at.
