BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre

Launched via Kickstarter, BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre is one of the biggest downloadable action games to come to the world of isometric gaming in a while. Think Diablo 3 and Path of Exile or even the classic Baldur’s Gate role-playing games that came out on the PC in the 1990s – BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre wears its inspirations with pride.

The Game Review

Building a Diablo clone is a popular way to push a role-playing game but increasingly devs are turning to this format to tell tales of mayhem and chaos, as demonstrated by BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre. In many ways, the game recalls the uber-controversial title Rage, the game from an isometric perspective that simulated being a mass murderer but really did nothing different from the myriad of other games in its genre.

Thankfully, the game not only eschews that dark and nihilistic tone but also offers a game jam-packed with action and a flair for design.

Like Diablo, you basically dungeon dive and clear out enemies and collect loot. Arming your player character with guns and other armaments, you take down wave after wave of hostiles with the goal of being the last guy standing at the end. There’s even a mode wherein the player character assumes a demonic guise and is able to breathe fire at the enemies on screen, setting them ablaze in the process.

Typical of games in this genre, there is a heavy emphasis on combat, loot, and exploration. Basically, you have to keep moving the minute your feet hit the ground, and BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre never lets up.

Most noticeable is the graphics engine that this title is using. Not only is everything incredibly detailed but it is also bright and vibrant, allaying some of the what is otherwise an overwhelming dark title. The environments, for their part, look largely made up of industrial areas with the occasional slice of neon here and there. It’s not a unique art style but it isn’t offensive in the least.

Again, considering how fast-paced the action is and how smoothly everything moves on the screen, BDSM: Big Drunk Satanic Massacre is as much of a graphical marvel as it is a gameplay gem.

A huge draw for these games is their ability to offer continual replay value and here this title excels spectacularly. Those who enjoy loot and carnage will have few complaints about this game. For those of us that have played a lot of Diablo, however, there might not be much here to entice you into buying the game. That said, if you’re a fan of isometric action games then this title is a literal no-brainer but if not then you might be satisfied with a Diablo game or even one of the more cheery role-playing games made in this style like Pillars of Eternity. That’s because, for everything the game does right, there are a few areas where it falls short, and keeping the player’s attention outside of the combat is one of those areas.
