The Review

If you grew up playing SEGA arcade games and home consoles, this fun mobile title will definitely deliver a punch of nostalgia. Although the story is light, SEGA Heroes offers a variety of modes and a fun leveling system that will keep you coming back time and time again. With over 35 characters to unlock (and more are added every few weeks), SEGA Heroes is an interesting blast through your favorite franchises.

Like other Puzzle Quest inspired titles, SEGA Heroes fuses match-3 mechanics with RPG combat. Each level has your team facing an enemy team, with the main focus on a board of colored cubes. Matching at least three colored cubes together on your turn will cause one of your characters to attack, depending on the color of the cube you match. Matching more than three cubes often results in a special move, and once you’ve built up enough power, you can unleash a character’s ultimate attack.

The main campaign section is broken up into zones, which contain around 7 – 8 stages a piece. There are well over 100 stages to complete, so you’ll never run out of opponents to fight! When you start out, you’ll have a handful of characters to take out on missions.

Characters are color-coded to emphasize their strengths, and you can only have one character of each color on your team. For example, my favorite red hero (usually powerful and high-damage) were Blaze Fielding from the Streets of Rage series. I also enjoyed using Rouge from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise as my go-to blue character.

As you complete stages, you’ll earn a variety of resources along with character shards. If you collect enough shards, you’ll be able to unlock that character and start taking them into battle!

Besides playing the campaign and unlocking characters, there are a few other modes you can enjoy in SEGA Heroes. New modes unlock as you increase your overall experience level, so some of these modes aren’t available right from the start.

However, if you spend a little bit of time with the game, you’ll quickly have access to all of them. In Arena mode, you can take your favorite team and pit them against other player’s teams in an online battle. Strategy and team composition are major focuses in online fights, so be ready to have your matching skills tested!

You can also try out Survival mode, where you take on increasingly difficult stages without any health replenishments between stages. There’s also an additional campaign for special characters, as well as timed events and special challenges.

SEGA Heroes is a fun match-3 game that is sure to catch your attention, especially if you’re a fan of classic 16-bit era gaming. It’s fun to see your favorite characters battle it out, and recruiting them to your team is tons of fun.

There’s an awesome variety of characters from memorable franchises, including Jet Set Radio, The House of the Dead, Sonic the Hedgehog, Shinobi, Crazy Taxi, and more! If you’re a fan of SEGA and enjoy match-3 puzzle games, definitely give SEGA Heroes a try!
