A Quiet Place: Day One

If I were to do the most anticipated movies of 2024, A Quiet Place Day One would be pretty high on that list. I just love this franchise and so far the first two movies have been great and I am happy to say that this third movie is another fantastic entry. This is the first not to be written and directed by John Krasinski, but he was involved with the production.

The Movie Review

This works in a pretty interesting way as it is a prequel as well as being its own thing. As the title suggests, this happens right at the start of this super-hearing alien creature pandemic. Our main character this time around is a cancer patient called Sam. Sam is played by the always awesome, Lupita Nyong’o.

Not only does Sam have cancer, she is actually terminally ill and living in a hospice. Sam is convinced to go on a trip to New York to see a show, but while she is in the city, that is when this “invasion” happens and she ends up stuck there. Sam ends up being knocked out cold and when she wakes up, she is with a group of other survivors.

Supporting Cast and Characters

I do not want to go into too much detail here, but we have a great supporting cast with the likes of Stranger Things’s Joseph Quinn and also Djimon Hounsou (Captain Marvel, Shazam!, Gran Turismo). What is neat is that Djimon Hounsou is actually reprising his role from A Quiet Place Part II. I tried to see and read as little as I could about this movie, so seeing him being in this was a very welcomed surprise and a great way to tie this to the other two movies.

Sam finds out pretty quickly that she needs to be quiet as these creatures have super sensitive hearing and will just flat-out rip you apart! Sam has a cat and much has been made about the cats in A Quiet Place Day One. I found it kind of fun, to be honest, and I was at times way more concerned about the cat than I was about the humans!

Plot Nuances and Character Motivation

The only thing I was not 100 percent convinced of was that Sam wanted to go on this quest. No spoilers here, but what Sam wanted to do did not make a great deal of sense in the grand scheme of things and the way certain people just were cool with this was a little odd. It was not bad or anything like that and at the end of the day, you do kind of have to leave logic at the door and just go with the flow. Thankfully, Lupita Nyong’o is so awesome I did get over it.

Final Thoughts

This may sound obvious, but if you liked the other two A Quiet Place movies, you will have fun with this. Yes, it is more of the same, but that is not a bad thing. It was fun to see things when it all went to hell, but I do wish they went a bit more in with this. Sam gets knocked out cold and then the others kind of fill her in. I would have liked to have seen more of people freaking out and just being lost while this was all going down.

It has been revealed that A Quite Place Part III is in the works, not only that, it is scheduled for release in 2025 and they have said it will be the final part of this story. I am very excited for Part III as so far this franchise is 3 for 3 in my opinion. The only way you would not enjoy this is if you did not like the other two as it is so similar.
