The wife and I will always make the effort to go and see a horror movie at the theatre and Cuckoo was a movie that I only saw one trailer for, but I thought that it looked like a weird and creepy time. Actually, weird and creepy is the best way to describe this movie and it is certainly one the stranger horror movies I have seen this year.

Plot Overview and Review of Cuckoo
Our main character is a teenage girl called Gretchen. Gretchen has trouble at home and she ends up moving to Germany to stay with her father, stepmother, and her half-sister, Alma. Gretchen is played by Hunter Schafer (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes)and she is a very likable protagonist I legit wanted to see how things would go for her, I was really rooting for her.
Now the thing is, it is not like her dad lives in the middle of Berlin! Nope, her father is staying at this resort in the German Alps and he is there to get it up and ready. This place is creepy as hell at the best of times, if someone invited me to a non-finished resort in the German wilderness, I would be like hell no, you just know the chances of you getting murdered by some kind of monster in the woods are 10/10!
Herr Kong and a Creepy Atmosphere
Anyway, things start off “normal” enough, but you get little weird things happening here and there. We meet a guy called Herr Kong, who is her dad’s boss and this dude is super weird and creepy and gives off strange vibes the moment we meet him. Dan Stevens plays this guy and you can tell that he was having a blast with the role. The attraction that he has to Gretchen’s sister is super weird.
The Suspenseful and Wild Ride
Gretchen starts to experience more and more weird things and before long she realizes that there is something wrong with this place, not just that, but her family is tied to it. I had a great time with this and I would advise that you go in as blind as possible as this is one heck of a wild ride to be on as you are never sure what is going to happen next. Many times I was not sure if what was happening was actually happening.
A Balance of Creepy Vibes and Humor
The movie has a very creepy and weird (there is that word again) vibe to it. However, it does have some humor, but the way the movie handles humor is very well done. We are not just talking laugh out loud wisecracks here. The humor more comes from characters pointing out just how weird, dome, and strange some of the stuff that is happening is.
A Tense and Unforgettable Scene
I have seen quite a few horror movies here and let me just say there is a scene in Cuckoo that may be my favorite scene in a horror movie this year! There is a scene where Gretchen is on her bike, being chased by something and this scene had me on the edge of my seat, gripping my soda super hard as it was so tense.
Final Thoughts
From the start all the way to the end, Cuckoo had me! This is a very fun, weird, and at times tense and frightening horror movie. This is one of those movies that I am actually excited to watch again and I know for sure I will pick up the 4K the day it comes out. Do not sleep on this one, if your theatre is still showing it, make the effort to go and see if, if you like horror you will have a great time.
