Double Jeopardy is a 1999 crime thriller starring Ashley Judd (check her out in Olympus Has Fallen or the Divergent series) and Tommy Lee Jones (Coal Miner’s Daughter, Batman Forever, Captain America: The First Avenger). I wonder how many spouses actually researched if the whole double jeopardy thing was true after watching this? While this may not be the best crime thriller I have ever seen, it is a fun time, and as it had been so long since I last watched it, I had forgotten a great deal of what went down here.

The Movie Review
After watching Double Jeopardy, I had a look online to see what people thought of it, and I was surprised to see that when this was released, it did not do all that well with the professional critics. I wonder if that had anything to do with the whole Harvey Weinstein thing, where he tried to sabotage Ashley Judd’s career?
Ashley Judd plays the role of Libby Parsons. Libby is “happily married” to Nick, and they have a kid, a little boy called Matty. Libby and Nick are on a romantic boat trip together when Libby wakes up, finds blood everywhere, and Nick is missing. Of course, Libby freaks out, and at the worst possible time, the Coast Guard shows up.
Turns out that Nick called for help, and now the Coast Guard has shown up while there is blood everywhere, and Libby is even holding a knife! Nick’s body is never found, but there is enough evidence to convict Libby, and she goes down for the murder of her husband, but she asks her “friend” Angela to look after Matty.
Double Jeopardy Plot and Legal Twist
During a phone call, Libby finds out that Nick is still alive and is given some advice from a friend in prison to do her time and get out as fast as she can. Turns ouhttps://youtu.be/HWaLc_-VUpot that there is a double jeopardy clause in the USA that states a person cannot be convicted of the same crime twice, meaning Libby could track down Nick and kill him without being sent back to prison.
Libby busts her butt, being on her best behavior and after several years Libby gets released from prison into the custody of her parole officer, Travis, played by Tommy Lee Jones. Libby starts trying to piece together where Nick is and starts her plan of revenge to make him pay for what he did to her.
Final Thoughts on Double Jeopardy
I will be honest, Double Jeopardy is a kind of predictable movie, but with the premise, they do have to let the audience know that Nick is alive quite quickly. The real “mystery” of the movie comes from the “why” did Nick do this and I have to say, his reasons are not all that great, but they do work.
Seeing Ashley Judd frantically run around trying to prove that Nick is alive is fun stuff. With that being said, it has probably been 15 plus years since I saw this movie, and I am not sure I would be in a rush to watch it ever again. It is not a terrible movie at all, but it is not the kind of movie that holds up to multiple viewings. Still, if you are looking for a crime thriller to watch, you can do a lot worse than this.
