Interstellar

Interstellar was Christopher Nolan’s first movie after he finished his epic Dark Knight trilogy – Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012) – so it had some heavy expectations. I am a big fan of his work, but find that when people tend to talk about him and his movies it always comes off as pretentious and that is a shame as his movies while epic in scale, having great writing and usually featuring fantastic performances are a lot of fun.

The Film Review

Interstellar is a movie that is very hard to review. I say this because it is a real experience and one of those rare movies that keep you guessing the whole time you watch it for the first time. So with that in mind, I am not going to be dishing out any spoilers here at all.

The movie from a cast point of view is stacked. Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, John Lithgow, Michael Caine, and about a million more notable stars are all in this movie! It is honestly crazy just how much talent is in front of the camera, even smaller roles are filled by notable actors.

So what is the story of Interstellar? Basically, humanity has pretty much used all of what Earth has to offer up. A wormhole is discovered that can lead us to a new home, or to new resources or at the very least give us hope that humanity can continue. The main character is Cooper who is played by Matthew McConaughey and he decides to leave his daughter and take on the mission.

As you would expect things do not go smoothly and we go on an adventure to different worlds, different times, and through it all you have the struggle of these scientists who are at their core trying to do what is best for humanity. It is impossible to pigeonhole Interstellar into just a quick paragraph to describe its plot. Like many other Christopher Nolan movies, you need to watch it a couple of times to get the full picture.

There is a lot of science mumbo jumbo in this movie, but I never felt that it was too over the top and trying to be too “real” at its core this is still a science fiction movie. The movie looks like a million bucks, seriously the effects are unreal and they are so good they won an Oscar! Seriously it is a movie that has so much going on it is hard to take it all in. I actually watched this in 4K and it is one of the best 4K transfers I have seen.

While this is a science fiction movie and you could say it is about mankind needing to leave earth to find a new home. Interstellar has a lot of heart and Matthew McConaughey’s plight of leaving his daughter behind pulls very hard on the heartstrings and it is so very well done and actually one of my favorite parts of the movie.

Speaking of favorite parts of the movie. Interstellar has these really cool “robots” that are just awesome. I love the design of these things and it is so creative the way that they work. They are certainly not like how most other movies do robots. I really wish I could have seen more of what these can do.

Interstellar is a movie that I have seen four times now and each time I pick up something new. Nothing though is as jaw-dropping as that first time you watch it! I really recommend you watch this movie and if you can check out the 4K version of the Blu-Ray as these effects deserve to be seen in HD.
