Because I am someone that loves creature feature movies, The Meg 2: The Trench was one of my most anticipated movies of the year! I thought the first Meg was a ton of fun, but I liked this one better. I know it has gotten mixed reviews, but if you go to watch a movie like this and expect anything more than what you get, that is on you! It is a movie about giant prehistoric sharks, what were you expecting, The Shawshank Redemption?

The Movie Review
Taking place five years after the last movie, Jonus the hero from the first movie fights eco crimes, but he is now also step-father to Meiying, Suyin from the first movie’s daughter. Jason Statham is pretty much Jason Statham in every movie and that is exactly what we have here. Actually, The Meg 2: The Trench feels far more like a typical Jason Statham action movie than the first one did.
Diving into Exploration and Action
Mana One is still trying to protect the oceans of the world, all the while exploring and charting the secrets that the trench has to offer. Suyin’s brother Wu Jing is now in charge and he along with Jonus and Cliff makes up an impressive team that is pretty much running things.
Unconventional Connections and Villains
Wu Jing is kind of crazy and has developed an interesting relationship with a megalodon called, Haiqi. Jonus does not believe that Wu Jing has any kind of control over Haiqi and I thought this was a lot of fun, especially during the final act. The cast is great and they have a lot of chemistry together.
Unveiling Unexpected Twists
Another cast member that I thought was a lot of fun was, DJ who went from not being able to swim in the first movie to being a James Bond-like badass in this one! I do not want to go into spoilers here, but apart from the “creatures” The Meg 2: The Trench does actually have some villains this time around.
Thrilling Underwater Expedition
One of them was a real surprise for me and I will admit that I did not see it coming, but the other “macho” villain that the movie has is one of the many ways that this movie felt more like a typical Jason Statham action movie than its predecessor did. Still, I found it to be fun and it gave the movie a kind of 80s action movie vibe about it.
Deep Dive and Intense Encounters
Our team heads down to the trench and they come across a mining operation! This was pretty awesome to see, but as you would guess, they ended up stranded at the bottom of the trench and need to fight their way back up to the surface. I thought this was a blast and yes, it is very much typical Jason Statham, but I love most of his action movies so I got a real kick out of it.
Unleashing the Unpredictable
A hole is blasted into the weird cold protective layer that separates the trench from the rest of the ocean and wouldn’t you know it, some megalodons break through! However, it’s not only megalodons that get through, these weird creatures that can also walk on land do and so does a giant octopus! It all ends up with Jason Statham and his crew having to fight the creatures and the bad guys.
A Big Dumb Action Movie Is All I Want
I had heard that The Meg 2: The Trench was getting a mixed, mostly negative response and I legit have no idea why! This is a big dumb action movie with giant sea creatures and it never pretends to be anything more than that! It is kind of like a high-budget Sharknado movie if I am being honest and I mean that in the most complimentary way! If you want a fun experience, check out The Meg 2!
