My Hero Academia: You’re Next

My Hero Academia is something that I have really enjoyed watching with my son. We love the TV show and we have seen all the movies and enjoyed them all and we have played and enjoyed some of the video games too. My Hero Academia: You’re Next is the most recent movie and this one had a bigger presence at our theatre than any other My Hero Academia movie so far! It actually had large posters up advertising it and it was on more than just once or twice per day.

The Movie Review

The thing is if you check out the My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising or the My Hero Academia: Two Heroes reviews that I have done before, you probably already know the way this review is going to go. These movies based on this awesome anime are always a fun time. They tend to be their own contained story, but they all sort of flow together and I would legit have a hard time saying which one I liked the best. If you like the show you will like this movie. However, if you have tried to watch the show and never gotten into it, this latest movie is not going to change your mind.

My Hero Academia: You’re Next has a great idea for a story. The story takes place after All Might loses most of his powers, Deku and the gang are filling in, trying to keep the streets safe in his place. It is fun seeing these guys (and perhaps a new face) step up and really show that they have learned what it truly means to become a hero. I liked the way that the movie showed that being a hero is not just all punching bad guys, saving the day and then being praised for it.

In the absence of All Might, a new force rises up, someone wants to take the mantle and become the new All Might, but this person does not have the same values and heart that All Might has. This new character, Dark Might is pretty awesome and the way he plans to spread darkness across the city and make people fall to his brand of justice is something that both my son and I thought was really cool.

The Standalone Story

The movie does stand on its own, while it does take place after the stuff with All Might losing most of his powers, this story could take place pretty much any time after that as all the events here are wrapped up by the end of the movie. I am not hating on it at all for this, that is the way most movies based on an anime are. They have to be their own contained story and that is ok.

Spectacular Animation and Action

As you would expect from a movie from this franchise, the fighting scenes in My Hero Academia: You’re Next are amazing! The animation quality and the bright, vibrant colors make this one of the most eye-catching anime series in general and when blown up on the big screen, it truly does look fantastic. The movie is a little slower paced in between the action, but it does make sense with the story that they are trying to tell here.

Is My Hero Academia: You’re Next Worth Watching?

It sounds so obvious, but if you are a fan of the series and the other movies, My Hero Academia: You’re Next is going to entertain you. All of the My Hero Academia movies are entertaining in their own right, but I still think if I really had to pick a favorite, Heroes Rising is going to take the top spot. However, there is honestly not much between these movies, I like them all, pretty much equally.
