Piece by Piece

I love pretty much everything about Lego and in the early 00s, I was really into the stuff that The Neptunes and NERD were doing so Piece by Piece is a movie that appealed to me a great deal. So far, I think that all of the different Lego theatrical movies have been a ton of fun, Ninjago is still my favorite. With Piece by Piece, it kind of takes a different approach to the Lego movie formula and I think that it was a very clever idea.

The Movie Review

To start with, Piece by Piece does have the typical charm that you would expect from a Lego movie, but this is more of a documentary than a movie. This is the story of Pharrell Williams and it could have just as easily been a live action documentary that was made for something like Disney Plus. The fact that Pharrell had the idea to make his documentary in Lego is so freaking fun and fun is honestly the best way to describe this movie.

I will say that if you are a fan of his and the other artists that he has worked with over the years, you will get far more out of this movie. However, I also feel that anyone who is into music biopics will find the story being told here to be interesting. Pharrell is such a likable and lovable creative genius that it was so cool to get a little look behind the curtain and get a small idea of what makes him tick.

We get to see it all here. From his days as a kid, making friends with Chad Hugo and forming The Neptunes and all of the hits that he would have a hand in during the years that followed. We get a fantastic retelling of the major events in his career, but we also get to see a more personal side as well from him meeting his wife, the birth of his child, and his general outlook on life.

Iconic Lego Characters and Music

I got such a massive kick out of the various talented people that were in this movie, Lego Snoop Dogg, Lego Timbaland, and Lego Gwen Steffani had to be my favorites, but this movie is stacked with musical talent. Pharrell as you would expect even did a few new songs for this movie and that is pretty awesome. As you would expect, it has a fantastic soundtrack and my foot was tapping a great deal as I was watching the movie.

Final Thoughts on Piece by Piece

I was having a fun time watching Piece by Piece, but I will say that it did feel more like a documentary than a movie. Hey, it was a very entertaining “documentary” However, I will admit that it was the Lego aesthetic that gave the movie most of its charm. I will say that like all the other Lego movies, it looked fantastic, I think this movie more than any other Lego movie managed to nail the look of the characters.

Would I buy Piece by Piece on day one when it is released on 4K? I would probably have to say no, but I will probably add this to my collection at some point. I am glad this hung around in the theatre long enough for me to see it on the big screen as the visuals really did pop and it was awesome hearing that soundtrack through the super loud speakers my theatre has. If you love music movies and documentaries, give this a watch.
