I am a huge fan of Art the Clown and the Terrifier franchise and I think that Damien Leone has well and truly created one of the most iconic horror characters and franchises of the last couple of decades. It is kind of hard to talk about the first Terrifier as I am writing this after I have already reviewed Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3, Terrifier 3 by the way is one of my favorite movies of 2024 and I could not be any more excited for the future of Terrifier.

The Movie Review
The thing with the first movie is that this is mostly an Art the Clown causing chaos movie. The goal here is to showcase Art the Clown and the sadistic nature that he has and the movie 100 percent achieves that. This is a very gory and gross kind of movie, but in comparison to the two movies that follow it, it is not as extreme…. Or I just have a warped sense of what is gross and gory these days thanks to having my mind warped by horror movies since the 80s.
A Closer Look at the Plot of Terrifier
The way the plot in Terrifier happens is quite clever. It starts out with a disfigured woman telling her story on TV and then we meet two of our main characters, Dawn and Tara who are leaving a Halloween party. If I am being honest, Dawn and Tara are not all that likable characters.
These two ladies are in for one hell of a rough night! You see, they come into contact with Art the Clow and he starts stalking them through the night, catching up with them in a run down building. On paper, Terrifier is a very standard kind of slasher movie, but Damien Leone is a fantastic filmmaker and he has a bit of a twist for you.
Victoria’s Role and the Evolution of the Franchise
Our “final girl” is not actually introduced until about halfway through the movie, Victoria is the sister of Tara and she is coming to pick Tara and Dawn up and she ends up becoming the next victim of Art. Victoria is a fantastic character and the way that her role has grown into what it became in Terrifier 3 is truly awesome stuff and a prime example of why this is one of the best horror franchises going today.
There is a great deal of blood and gore in Terrifier, but as I said, it is nowhere near the level of what would come. Art looks creepy as hell and David Howard Thornton is just so great in this role with his mannerisms and the facial expressions he makes. He is truly an awful and despicable character, but you cannot help, but root for him to see what messed up way he is going to take care of his next victim!
Why You Should Watch the Entire Terrifier Trilogy
I love all three of the Terrifier movies, but if I were ranking them, it is not hard for me to do at all, 3, 2, and then 1 is the order that they go in for me. There is some important stuff in the first Terrifier, but I do feel that Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3 flow together better if that makes sense. The best way to watch these movies is to watch all three of them!
