Not too long ago, I checked out The King of Kings, and today we are once again visiting Angel Studios with their latest release, The Last Rodeo. Angel Studios has been very prolific lately with their releases, and The Last Rodeo once again (after The Shift and Homestead) sees them teaming up with Neil McDonough.
Where to Watch The Last Rodeo
The Last Rodeo was released on May 23, 2025. You can watch the film on these streaming services Angel, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV or Fandango at Home.
The Last Rodeo Movie Review
I have always loved the cowboy style and have said to my wife, if we, for whatever random reason, found ourselves in Texas, I am 100 percent rocking a cowboy hat. With The Last Rodeo being about bull riding, it caught my attention, that and I think Neil McDonough is a great actor, and let me tell you, for this role, he got into phenomenal shape.
Neil McDonough’s Performance in The Last Rodeo
Neil McDonough plays the role of a man called Joe. Joe is a legend on the rodeo circuit, a three-time world champion, plus he is also a military veteran. Joe has a bit of a strained relationship with his daughter, but he deeply loves her. This strained relationship comes from his past troubles that saw him try to ride a bull when he was drunk and nearly get killed as a result.
The Last Rodeo Storyline and Themes
However, Joe’s bull riding skills are needed here. You see, Joe’s grandson is very ill and he needs expensive medical care, and it just so happens there is a huge cash prize for this latest bull riding contest. Joe coming out of retirement to compete is a huge deal, and it creates a lot of buzz for the competition. However, even though he gets in great shape, it is not a guarantee that Joe will win.
Joe is doing this for the right reasons, but he is also doing it for himself too. I loved the stuff with Joe and his daughter connecting, while this is very much a Neil McDonough movie, we have a fantastic supporting cast here. I got a huge kick out of seeing Shooter McGavin himself, Christopher McDonald, playing a pretty big part in the movie.
Faith and Family in Angel Studios’ The Last Rodeo
While this is an Angel Studios production, the Christianity thing is not as on the nose here as it is in some of their other movies. Granted, faith does play a part in things, but I could have watched this without knowing it was an Angel Studios movie and would never for one second have known that it was.
The Last Rodeo Visuals and Rodeo Action
The Last Rodeo is a great looking movie. I thought the rough and tough rodeo setting was awesome, and I do not know how they did it, but the bull riding stuff was epic. No way in a million years would I ever try this! It is pretty exciting stuff, and you do grow to care about Joe, and you do not just worry about him getting hurt; you are also worried that if he fails, it could be very bad news for his daughter and grandson.
Final Thoughts on The Last Rodeo
To be honest, I am not sure this is a movie I would be in a rush to watch again, but I am still glad that I watched it. The rodeo setting was cool, and there were some good characters here that I cared about. This one is pretty easy to recommend, and as I said, do not be worried about this ramming faith down your throat; this is more about telling a good story than it is sending a message.
