I had a great time with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. This is a Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, Aladdin, Wrath of Man) movie and it is pretty much exactly what you would expect a World War II Guy Ritchie movie to be. That by the way is meant in the most complimentary way possible as I love most of Guy Ritchie’s stuff.

The Movie Review
Hidden Gem of the Year
When it comes to action movies, this is one of the hidden gems of the year. I only saw the trailer once at my theatre and it seems to have gone under most people’s radars. From what I understand it has not had a full global release yet so it may still need to find its audience but it honestly deserves to.
True Story with a Twist
Set during World War II The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is based on a true story. I do use the term “based on a true story” quite loosely as Guy Ritchie has certainly taken many liberties to make it more exciting and crazy for the big screen. It is kind of cool how the James Bond creator Ian Fleming is in the movie, well as a character, not the actual author of course!
Gus March-Phillips: The Real-Life Inspiration
The reason for that is the main character in this movie is Gus March-Phillips who is played by Henry Cavill. Ian Fleming stated that the character of James Bond was inspired by Gus March-Phillips, that is something I thought was very cool and while this is a very, very small part of the movie, it is cool that it is here.
Operation Postmaster Mission
The plot of The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is about the Operation Postmaster mission that took place during World War II. The Special Operations Executive (SEO) were a group that did under-the-radar missions, the kind of stuff where people would need to get their hands dirty. This is where the “ungentlemanly” aspect of things comes into play.
The leader of this team is Gus March-Phillips. Gus puts together a team that is tasked with going on a mission to take care of the supply chain for Nazi U-Boats. That is the “main mission” along the way, Gus and his team take part in so many epic action set pieces that see them plow through a ton of Nazis.
Action-Packed and Violent Fun
This is just so much fun! The movie features the iconic over-the-top violence you would expect from Guy Ritchie! We have some epic shootouts and even some badass close-quarters hand-to-hand style action scenes. There is even a freaking musical-type scene here too that sounds like it would be out of place, but it works…. And is super hot too thanks to the beautiful Eiza González!
Star-Studded Cast
We have an epic cast in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. While Henry Cavill no doubt carries the movie. Reacher’s Alan Ritchson, Alexy Pettyfer, and Henry Golding are also on hand here. While we have some great action scenes and some rather amusing moments too. Despite the very talented cast, I will be honest and say that I had a hard time actually remembering anyone’s name!
They do a part at the end of the movie, telling you about the real heroes the characters were based on, but as I did not remember some of the names of the characters, I had a hard time connecting with this like I wanted to. To be honest, that just gives me an excuse to watch this thrill ride again when it is released on Blu-Ray or streaming.
Perfect Popcorn Movie
If you like action movies and get a kick out of a typical Guy Ritchie movie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a movie you will have a lot of fun with. This is the kind of movie that is the perfect description of a “popcorn movie” It is fun, loud, and violent and I legit cannot wait to watch it again!
