Brought to us by Blumhouse, The Woman in the Yard is a movie that I had very, very high hopes for. I am a massive fan of Blumhouse, and even my least favorite Blumhouse movie is not a bad movie., As far as I am concerned, they are a studio that does very little wrong. With that being said, The Woman in the Yard is a movie that I thought was ok, but if I were to have written this right after I saw it, I would have scored it lower. However, the more I have thought about it, the more I have kind of liked it.

The Movie Review
The trailer for this looked awesome and gives you the basics of the plot. Our main character is a woman called Ramona who has lost her husband due to a car accident, and she has a badly injured leg, causing her to use crutches to get around. She lives in a big farmhouse that clearly needs a lot of work.
Meet the Characters of The Woman in the Yard
Ramona lives here with her two kids, a teenager, Taylor, and little Annie. You can tell that Ramona is not doing well after losing her husband, and you get the impression right away that Taylor is picking up a lot of the slack. Despite this, it does look like Ramona is trying to be there for her kids. Our four main characters in Danielle Deadwyler as Ramona, Peyton Jackson as Taylor, Estella Kahiha as Annie, and Okwui Okpokwasili as the Woman all deliver solid and believable performances.
A Mysterious Visitor Arrives
In no time at all, we get The Woman in the Yard showing up as they realize that there is a strange woman dressed all in black sitting in their yard. Despite her injured leg, Ramona goes out to see what the deal with this woman is and their interaction is strange to say the least with her telling Ramona “today is the day” leaving Ramona confused as to what this woman is here for.
Rising Tension Inside the Farmhouse
Inside the house, tensions are super high as Taylor feels that there is something wrong here and Ramona is not telling him and Annie what is happening. Ramona tries to downplay the situation for her kids, but before long, they are in a fight with whatever this woman is. The trailer does show a great deal of what is happening in the movie, but there is a pretty good twist in regards to who the woman all dressed in black is.
Horror, Tension, and Twists
There are a couple of good jump scares, and the tension at the start of the movie is done very well. However, The Woman in the Yard is perhaps trying to be a little bit too clever for its own good. In many ways, it reminded me of the movie The Babadook, which I feel like I am the only horror fan in the world who does not like. No spoilers, but we basically go on a descent into madness as Ramona takes us on this ride.
Final Thoughts on The Woman in the Yard
When the credits started to roll, I was at about a 5/10 for The Woman in the Yard. I certainly did not hate the movie, but I did not think it lived up to what I built up in my head from seeing the trailer. Yet the more I thought about it, the more I started to come around and think that the movie did have a pretty powerful message. This is one that I feel I perhaps need to watch again in a few months, perhaps even a year, to see if I like it more. However, I do think that it has the potential to go the other way and be something that I like less on a second viewing.
