Trading Places is one of those movies that I saw at a way too young of an age! Brought to us by John Landis and starring the awesome duo of Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd, Trading Places is a movie that I always try and watch around Christmas time. This is an 80s comedy classic and it is just as much fun to watch today as it was as an inappropriately aged 9 year old when I saw this on TV for the first time!

Is Trading Places a Christmas Movie?
One of the fun things about the movie is the debate about if this is a Christmas movie or not. I believe that this is a Christmas movie because it takes place at Christmas time and Dan Akroyd dresses up as freaking Santa Clause. However, some people argue that the movie does not contain the Christmas spirit or any actual themes about Christmas and the fact that the movie takes place at Christmas does not mean it is a Christmas movie. There is no real right or wrong answer to be fair, I just think that this and movies like Die Hard make for a fun Christmas movie debate.
The Hilarious Plot of Trading Places
The plot of Trading Places is a ton of fun. Dan Akroyd plays the role of Louis Winthorpe the third and he is a big time player at a fancy brokerage firm. He is a typical wealthy upper-class kind of guy. He has a good job, he is good at his job and he has a great life with a pretty wife, a nice home, and everything else that you would expect.
Our other main character is Eddie Murphy who plays the role of Billy Ray Valentine. Billy Ray is a street hustler and is always looking to make a quick buck or score a free meal. Billy Ray and Louis cross paths and Louis thinks that Billy Ray is trying to rob him, ends up calling the cops and there is a big scene caused by
The Duke Brothers’ Twisted Bet
While this commotion is happening, Randolph and Mortimer Duke, the brothers who won the firm Louis works for are watching, discussing what is going down. They have opposing views in regard to nature vs nurture and come up with an idea for a bet. They decide to switch the places of Louis and Billy Ray, and they end up getting Louis fired and arrested, causing him to lose everything! At the same time, they give Billy Ray a job. The idea is to see how they react to a change in their circumstances.
The Consequences and Ultimate Revenge
This is a pretty sick and twisted bet, but it sure is funny seeing the way that Louis falls apart and if it were not for the help of a hooker played by Jamie Lee Curtis, things could have ended pretty badly for him! On the flip side, Billy Ray is able to use his street smarts and hustling skills to succeed in the world of finance.
However, Billy Ray learns of the brother’s bet and decides to tell Louis. Louis and Billy Ray bury the hatchet and come up with a way to stick it to the brothers and make a crap ton of cash in the process. It is a fun story that is made even more fun by the performances and chemistry that Dan Akroyd and Eddie Murphy have. I really cannot say much more, Trading Places is a comedy and Christmas classic and a movie that I watch without fail every December in the run up to Christmas.
