7 Rings: the Song Review
Similar to her previous single (Thank U, Next) 7 Rings became popular worldwide as it debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song also managed to make its way to the top in many countries including Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Estonia, and Switzerland.
Talking about the production of 7 Rings, Grande tweeted how the song initially originated in one of her hangouts with her friends. She vividly explained how, after having too much to drink, went to Tiffany’s with her friends where they all order rings.
7 Rings generally talks about Grande having to enjoy all the luxuries of life thanks to the wealth earned through her musical career. The song begins with Grande singing about how she has had her fair share of difficult moments but is now independent and strong-willed. She clearly boasts her wealth by talking about how she has the money to afford whatever she wants in life including expensive makeup, hair products, jewelry, and other materialistic objects.
The main chorus consists of Grande bragging about her wealth by simply stating that she can afford whatever she wants in life. In the latter part of the song, the focus partially shifts from Grande’s wealth to her independence. She relates how her financials have helped make her more independent by not having to rely on anyone else. The bragging continues on till the very end of the song.
The music video is in synchronization with the song’s overall theme. It begins with Grande and her friends partying in a mansion, presumably belonging to her. The party itself seems luxurious with expensive cutlery and champagne freely available for all the guests.
The video also contains graphical effects that move as per the background beat. It also portrays Ariana showcasing her skills as an artist. She can be seen wearing revealing clothes and dancing around with the background performers.
Meanwhile, the mansion seems to be laden with diamonds, jewelry, graffiti, as well as a huge champagne tower. The song ends with everyone, including Grande, posing for the camera as the video fades out.
The Song Success
Ever since its release, 7 Rings has been received with a bunch of mixed reviews. Fans loved the composition of the song, as well as Grande’s own personal performance. At the same time, however, the song has been well criticized for its lyrics. Critics have argued that Grande has done nothing but put a price on independence and freedom, giving a bad name to all those factions that are based upon equality.
Commercially, the song has managed to perform exceptionally well. The official music video for the song managed to gain over 23 million views in only its first day, making it the biggest opening of 2019 till date.
