Insidious: Out of the Further

Insidious is up there as one of my favorite horror franchises of all time, and when it comes to Blumhouse movies, I think I just so slightly prefer the Insidious series over The Conjuring universe, but there is not much in it. This was a movie I was very excited to check out and it was up there as one of my most anticipated movies of 2026.

Where to Watch Insidious: Out of the Further

The Movie Review

Despite having seen them all multiple times, in the couple of weeks leading up to the release of Insidious: Out of the Further, I rewatched the previous five movies and had a great time doing so. When I first saw Insidious: The Red Door, I liked it, but I was not blown away, and at the time, I said it was clearly number 5 if I were ranking them. However, in watching it for the first time since I saw it, it was far better than I remembered it being, and that got me even more excited for Out of the Further.

Our main character here is a single mom called Gemma. 20 years before the events of the movie, Gemma saw her mom commit suicide, and as you would expect, it left a really deep scar on her. The opening scene, and seeing what this kid goes through, is pretty brutal stuff, and it pretty much sets the tone for what is coming for the next 90 or so minutes.

In the present day, Gemma lives with her daughter, Maya, and she has a boyfriend, a cop called Nick, but Maya is not aware that her mom is dating. Like others in the Insidious series, Gemma can astral project and visit the Further, but she is extra special as she is what Eloise calls a courier. A courier is someone who can take things to the Further from the real world, but more importantly than that, and more terrifying than that, she can bring things back to the real world.

As you would expect, there is something evil lurking in the dark (just like in Michael Jackson’s Thriller!), keeping an eye on Gemma! There is this extra evil entity in the Further, a blindfolded man who wants to use Gemma’s ability to bring the dead back to the real world! What makes this even creepier is that this guy was the leader of a cult before he died, and he has followers in the living world who have been beating Gemma down to make her weak so that this entity can take her over and unleash his plans to bring the dead back to life.

The three elderly cultist members are awesome! These old cultists are just so damn creepy, and the scene in the dentist’s office (Gemma is a dental hygienist) is just so well done. I want to give the trailer some credit here. The trailer shows a bit of this scene, but it is just the tip of the iceberg for how great this scene is- easily one of the best and creepiest scenes in the franchise, and we also get a badass ending to this scene as well! Bravo to the trailer editor who put this scene in the trailer but did not spoil the really good stuff.

Eloise manages to get to Gemma before it’s too late, and she puts her in contact with a woman called Claire, who can also astral project, and through Claire, Eloise is able to actually talk to Gemma in the real world. I am not going into spoilers here, but there are a few different layers to this movie. Sure, the main focus is on Gemma, but the way it also ties into her mother and her daughter as well is very cool.

I am kind of surprised to see that Insidious: Out of the Further is getting as mixed reviews as it is, as I had a lot of fun with this one. It made a better first impression than The Red Door did, but I am not going to put Out of the Further into the ranking yet. I want to be fair to it and wait until I have seen it again before I do. If you like the Insidious franchise, I think you will have fun with this. I hope that it does well enough, as I would love to see another movie. There was a rumored spin-off and a crossover with the awesome Sinister movies planned, but so far, nothing has ever come of those.
