The Game Review and the Gameplay
The Counter-Strike series first debuted back in 2000 from Valve Corporation and centered around terrorists and counter-terrorist squads battling attempting to achieve conflicting goals in an online multiplayer first-person shooter game. Much of the genre, especially in terms of online play, was dominated by deathmatch-style games, making Counter-Strike’s squad-based approach a standout in the crowded online multiplayer first-person shooter genre.
Initially, Counter-Strike was developed as a mode for Valve’s blockbuster hit Half-Life but became its own thing because of its addicting gameplay. Of course, Valve scooped it up and took the series to the stratosphere in a series of follow-ups that refined the gameplay while retaining the core intensity that made it a classic.
Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies features a bevy of maps that conform to the needs of each of the 24 possible game modes including original maps from Counter-Strike and Condition Zero. You can play against a brigade of other people or even populate your arena with bots controlled by the AI.
In terms of weapons available to players, all of the Counter-Strike-derived implements are available for free. Other weapons can be made via the game’s crafting system, decoders, or special in-game events.
The crafting system is typical of massively multiplayer online role-playing games in that you typically need a design and a set of materials to craft an item. Most of the materials needed for in-game crafting in Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies comes from the gameplay itself. Low-level materials can be upgraded through a synthesis system, giving players another option in terms of upgrading their arsenal.
Most of the weapons in CS N:Z are based on real-world examples. But for the special zombie modes, there are more creative and off-the-wall weapons available that have no bearing on reality.
There is an item shop where players can purchase power-ups and support items.
Graphically speaking the game employs a much older looking aesthetic than most games. An advantage of this approach is that it is likely to run on most systems. In fact, the system requirements are low. To run the game Intel Celeron 2.13GHz and 512 MB should be enough although it is recommended to have slightly better specs of Intel Pentium4 3GHz or better and 1 GB RAM.
Reminiscent of the popular Call of Duty: Black Ops zombies mode, the addition of the undead in Counter-Strike Nexon: Zombies makes for a different type of game entirely from traditional Counter-Strike. That said, it also recalls Left 4 Dead, another series from Valve that focuses only on zombies and is often touted as one of the best games in the survival horror genre.
The sheer variety of options in the shooter make it a worthy competitor in a crowded space and the addition of in-game purchases does not impact the player’s ability to earn things by playing the game itself.
A time sink if ever there was a game that fit that description, this online FPS is an interesting take on a classic game engine.
