The Game Review

The story of Metro 2033 takes place several years after a nuclear attack decimates the land of Russia, forcing its civilians and survivors into the metro tunnels below the surface. Here, in the dirty and dank transportation tunnels, small survivor settlements have popped up. As the weakened and disheveled humans try to make due in this new and frightening world, terrifying mutated monsters wait in the dark.

You play as Artyom, a 24-year-old man who was born before the nuclear attack and lost his parents in the eventual chaos. Raised by a station leader under the surface, Artyom must fight back against the shadowy creatures known as The Dark Ones, or face utter distinction.

Although Metro 2033 Redux might be considered a first-person shooter and first glance, there’s more than just shooting enemies in this dark tale. Seeing as how the game takes place during a post-nuclear world, supplies are scarce. Instead of bartering with coins and currency, the members of the underground Metro outposts use ammo to pay for goods. It seems like self-defense is the highest priority, as owning a weapon and knowing how to use it is one of the first focal points of the game.

As you work your way through Metro 2033’s story, you’ll have to pay attention to your resources and surroundings. Break your gas mask or run out of air filters? Good luck surviving the radioactive surface. Low on ammunition? Your next enemy encounter might be your last. In Metro 2033, surviving the brutal environment is your top priority, seconded only by defeating the ominous Dark Ones.

Speaking of the Dark Ones, the plot in Metro 2033 Redux is a surprisingly well-done adaptation of the novel. While it doesn’t hit all the same high notes, the story here is interesting and full of twists and turns.

The game also takes into account player choice, as your actions (or inaction) can often change the outcome of the story. In both minor and major ways, your journey through the game feels personalized and a direct result of your choices. The game presents some tough moral dilemmas too, and you’ll often question your morals and ethics when making a decision. Metro 2033 Redux is a bleak and often sad tale, but it’s one that is effective and memorable.

Overall, Metro 2033 Redux is a great remaster of an already-awesome game. It takes some much-needed improvements from the later Metro games and implements them back into the original. This eases some annoyances and makes the experience more enjoyable, and the updated visuals give a clearer look at the world around you.

The horror elements in Metro 2033 Redux are just as effective as the survival mechanics, making the player feel underpowered and unsure of themselves. This is reflected in the story as well, resulting in a great shooting game that has much more depth than you would think.
