Epic Games Launcher

The Epic Games Launcher was said to be the first real threat to Steam. Well, the early days of the Epic Games Launcher have not exactly been smooth sailing and today I am going to look at the bad, the good and the what the heck in regards to the Epic Games Launcher.

How to Download Epic Games Launcher

You can download the program by clicking the Download button below the review. You should also read our reviews of other game download stores: Origin, Steam or Discord.

The Review

First of all, I love the idea of a company as large as Epic trying to do something like this. At the end of the day the more competition there is for our money the better it is for us the consumer. So, if this does go well and Epic does manage to compete with Steam. There will surely be a price war for our money which is good news for us.

Epic is also working really hard with developers offering them a bigger slice of the pie to release their games on there. A major part of this is that Epic is working hard to get exclusive deals, timed exclusives and they are also going to offer users free games as well. So far everything sounds great about the Epic Games Store.

The truth is running a service like this is no small feat and so far, (as I write this it has been live for around 5 months) things are not running as smooth as many people would like. If you look at a consumer review site, you will see many angry people. Not getting refunds when they are told they will, not being able to log in, other people being able to access their account are just some of the main issues that are there right now.

While these technical issues are of course very annoying. The program has some other strange issues. Now granted the store is going to be worked on, but there is no shopping basket! So, you can just buy something right away. Why can’t I add a selection of things to a basket and then check out?

As I write this there are no customer reviews on games! That is kind of insane to me and I get that some Steam reviews are very toxic, but to have no reviews at all is very strange. Also, the whole store, in general, has a very barebones and a not quite ready for public release kind of design to it.

Achievements have been part of gaming for over a decade now and for the Epic Games Launcher to not have any kind of achievement thing in place is mind-boggling. Also, you cannot even fire up some forums on the Launcher and discuss a game on there. In all honesty, The Epic Games Launcher feels like a service that is not for the gamers.

This is a service that is for the developers. I get that giving them more money for their games is a great thing. They seem to be doing this at the expense of the consumer. It is like they just want to keep the developers on board and they think the gamers will then come. Well, many gamers are not liking what they are experiencing right now.

I tested out World War Z on the client and found the whole process rather underwhelming. I have heard the term bare bones used over and over again by people talking about this and I think that is the best way to describe it. The Epic Games Launcher could be great, but in this early stage, it is extremely underwhelming.
