The Game Review

Following on from the events of the previous game, 3 years have passed since Chicago first installed ctOS and San Francisco is the next city to utilize it in the form of ctOS 2.0. This new city-wide operating system that’s designed to connect everyone together marks hacker Marcus as a potential suspect for a crime he did not commit. Following on from his punishment, Marcus teams up with the notorious hacking group DedSec to uncover the corrupt nature of the ctOS and bring it down to ensure that no one else will ever have to go through the same injustices that Marcus did against the system.

As a sequel to the first Watch Dogs, Watch Dogs 2 was designed with a lot of the same gameplay ideas and styles, with just a more polished approach this time around, alongside a few new mechanics to keep things interesting.

A return to form for the series is the stealth-based gameplay, which seems to be vastly improved this time around. You’re given access to your own little drone which can be used for surveillance, hacking different points in a building, and even as a distraction for when things get messy. Stealth is designed to be a much more important part of the game this time around and the hacking tools reflect that.

Just like the last game, hacking was the most interesting addition to the sandbox formula of the games and this time around it has been improved by a lot. The mechanics have been fleshed out for you to be able to hack a lot more than you previously could and that means your playstyle can be much more varied as a result. For the most part, if you can see it, you can probably hack it this time around.

Once again, side-missions make a return – a little more varied this time around – and you can still snoop on NPC’s out in the world and steal straight from their bank accounts if you wish to do so.

Once again, the developers took inspiration from the popular Grand Theft Auto franchise and everything they had learned from the first Watch Dogs title. While Watch Dogs didn’t receive the greatest response to its release, Watch Dogs 2 aimed to take everything players loved and enjoyed about the first game, all the while improving on some of the elements that weren’t quite as enjoyable the first time around.

  • More interesting main character this time around
  • Hacking is much more varied and fun to play with
  • An overall brighter and more visually impressive visual style
  • AI isn’t always completely consistent
  • Some abilities are too strong and easy to consider overpowered
