Bendy and the Ink Machine

Bendy and the Ink Machine is a downloadable adventure action game which contains the elements of survival horror. During the game, you try to escape from an abandoned studio where paranormal phenomena have been noticed. The game is distributed in an unusual way. The different parts of the game are divided into episodes just like in popular TV series. This model of distribution reminds of the way Telltale Games follows when releasing such titles as The Walking Dead or Minecraft: Story Mode. The studio behind the game is independent Canadian team TheMeatly Games. Bendy and the Ink Machine premiered on April 27, 2017, and is available only on PCs with Windows.

The Plot

The story of Bendy and the Ink Machine is definitely a strong side of the production. The player assumes the role of Henry who is a former employee of an animation studio. The former boss of our hero invites him to the studio. Being curious Henry soon finds himself in the middle of the action. After arriving at the location, he realizes that his former boss was involved in dark forbidden occult rituals. He also discovers that he had gone missing in unexplained circumstances. Being a resourceful individual Henry decides to initiate the search.

The main antagonist and opponent in the game, who will make it difficult for you to unravel the mystery of the studio and prevent you from escaping the location, will be Bendy. He is an animated character who has been inexplicably transferred to the real world and now wants Henry dead.

The following episodes published by the creators move the story onward and let you become familiar with the past of the main character. You also learn about his associates and meet the cartoon characters created by the studio. Thus the game resembles the story about the animatronics told in the Five Nights at Freddy’s series.

The Game Mechanics

The game mechanics of Bendy and the Ink Machine are what can be expected of classic adventure games. The game is shown from the first person perspective. The gameplay concerns mainly the exploration of the available locations and solving simple logical puzzles. Most of them require you to find finding the right items in a given room which you have then to use in order to manipulate the elements of the environment. There are also some stealth mechanics when you are forced to avoid enemies. At some stages of the game, you gain access to weapons that significantly increases your chances of survival. You can use them in two ways, either directly attacking your enemies, or destroying the elements of the environment and thus unlocking escape routes.

The Graphics

The graphics and physical engine in this free horror game are fueled by a modified Unity engine. The three-dimensional graphics have been designed in a characteristic way that brings to mind American cartoons from the 30’s and 40’s of the 20th century. This immediately brings to mind Cuphead that uses a similar style. Playing Bendy and the Ink Machine, you can feel like the characters known from the classic animated films of the Disney studio.
