The Game Review
The story follows the “big-bad wolf” who is acting sheriff around these parts for all fairy-tale creatures. As the wolf, it’s your job to detect and solve a bloody murder that has occurred amongst one of the other fairy-tale creatures. Since you’re the sheriff, you must investigate, discover clues, and occasionally fight your way out of certain situations to figure out what is going on. Throughout The Wolf Among Us, everyone seems on edge, and the story completely revolves around you and the choices you make in this narrative title.
The gameplay is very similar to Telltale’s other games, where you must walk around the scene, clicking on anything that might be of any interest and watch as your character makes a comment about it. During a lot of scenes, you’ll need to talk with other people, where you must choose one of four different options, all of which can effect the outcome of both the game and the scene that you’re currently in.
Failing to talk to a witness or a suspect properly can really make your job harder, but makes things more interesting, knowing that there’s no perfect way to get the job done, but it’s probably for the best that you try. Eventually, after you’ve found everything pertaining to the scene, Wolf comes to a conclusion with what happens and thus the story will continue.
During some scenes, things won’t go all that smoothly and you’ll be thrust upon a more action-packed moment in the game and will require some relatively decent reflexes on the player’s part. While Wolf is in the middle of being attacked during these moments, the game will flash onto the screen exactly what they want you to press. By pressing the button in time, the scene will continue to perform in your favor, but if you fail to hit the button on time the fight won’t exactly be going in your favor and can affect future moments in the story. Fail enough button prompts and you also might get a game over once you’ve failed enough times.
The biggest comparisons for the game would have to be Telltale’s: The Walking Dead, as it uses almost all of the same gameplay decisions as that title, with very few changes between the two. It also takes the classic point-and-click adventure formula of games like Monkey Island and similar classics.
