The Game Review

As should come as no surprise, Truck Simulator 2018: Europe doesn’t come with any sort of story. The game revolves around the player and their own personal hauling company, and a small cash-start to kick things off. By gaining more and more money, the player can level up their company, increase the amount of money they make for each job they do, and even buy new trucks along the way; providing that they are safe on the road.

The core gameplay loop of the game is to take different jobs and drive their truck from one point on the map to another, with as few issues as possible throughout the entirety of the drive as possible. Truck Simulator 2018: Europe is all about driving a truck properly and professionally. Staying in the proper lane, stopping at red lights, and taking note of the traffic on either side of the player is a key element of the game. Players that don’t abide by these rules as they drive across Europe will be fined and thus will lose out on a chunk of the money they’d initially earn from the job in the first place. Each job the player picks up will have a timer attached to it, and once again, failing to meet that time will result in a loss of income, so the game can get a bit tight at times if the player doesn’t take the time to abide by the laws of the road.

Aesthetically speaking, the game does its best to take a realistic approach with its visuals. While this isn’t conveyed perfectly due to mobile devices and their hardware limitations, it’s still a style the game manages to pull off successfully. With this in mind, it means the player can focus on the road ahead of them, without worrying about slowdown from their device at any point; something that’s typically prominent in older devices.

Obviously, the biggest comparison for this game is going to be Euro Truck Simulator 1 and ETS 2, a game that is incredibly similar in style. Visuals, controls, and the general gameplay loop are all pretty much the same, so the comparison between these two games is incredibly tight.

Truck Simulator 2018: Europe very clearly takes its biggest inspiration from the Euro Truck Simulator series but manages to make it its own on mobile platforms. Even though the touchscreen controls are a little hit and miss at times, there are other options for the player to sink their teeth into and with a game this large, there’s plenty to see and do, all from the very start of the game.
