I had so much fun binge-watching all eight episodes of Dead Boy Detectives. This is based on a rather obscure DC comic of the same name that has a bit of a cult following. What drew me to Dead Boy Detectives was that the show is set in the same universe as The Sandman. I loved that show so I was excited to get back into that world.

The TV Series Review
Now, the tie-in to The Sandman is not as big as you may think. There were these immortal beings in The Sandman called The Endless and Death from The Sandman is what links the two shows together. Apart from that this is not super connected. Do not let that put you off, this show more than stands on its own and it is so much fun.
Dead Boy Detectives is about these two ghosts who rather than going into the afterlife, have decided to stay on Earth to help spirits in need. They are always on the run from Death and when they do help a spirit crossover, they have to bolt out of there or Death will come looking for them too.
We have a great core cast of characters in this show. Edwin was killed in 1916 while at boarding school, it was a prank gone wrong and he ended up being taken to hell where he spent many decades! Edwin is the smart and analytical one of the pair, often overthinking things and not being into any screwing around. Edwin is seen as the brains of this operation.
Next up we have Charles. Charles was killed in 1989 and I love his 80s style, he is more outgoing and the muscle of the group. He has this awesome gimmick of a backpack that is a little pocket dimension he has mastered so he can carry all kinds of stuff in it. Edwin and Charles have fantastic chemistry and the way they bicker like an old married couple is super fun, plus you can tell that they really do care and love each other as well.
They live in London and they help this young woman called Crystal. Crystal is a medium and she has a demon possessing her. I really liked Crystal, she is one of the deeper characters in the show and we find out that her relationship with this demon was not what we first thought it was. Once the boys help Crystal out, she ends up joining the team and the three of them head over to the USA where Crystal is from to try and help her more.
It is here where things really pick up. Edwin ends up in trouble with a being called The Cat King and they are stuck in this little town. They meet another friend Niko who also joins the team. They work out of an apartment above a butcher’s that is run by a no-nonsense chick called Jenny. I loved Jenny and thought that she looked so familiar. Turned out she is the real-life sister of Kaley Cuoco from The Big Bang Theory.
As well as helping spirits with their problems. Our group also has many problems of their own to deal with as the series progresses. Edwin needs to get away from The Cat King, Death is still looking for them and a being called Night Nurse that finds lost ghosts is hunting down Edwin and Charles. Oh, they also manage to get into trouble with a dangerous witch too! This show is just a blast and while it does have a lot going on and it does do some major lore-building. It never becomes too much or too complicated to follow.
I would say that the best comparison for Dead Boy Detectives is Supernatural, the whole time I was watching it I was getting Supernatural vibes from it, all be it a bit goofier. This is a great show and another hit for Netflix, I really hope that this gets a second season as it is one of the most fun and quirky shows that I have seen this year.
