Blumhouse just continuously knocks it out of the part with their horror moves. The Insidious and Conjuring movies are of course their biggest franchises. Insidious: The Last Key is the fourth movie in the series, but in terms of chronological order it is the second movie.

Spoilers Ahead!!!
Insidious is the story of Elise Rainier who has a gift that allows her to communicate with the other side as well as step into their dimension, called The Further. Elise is played by Lin Shaye who is an actress that I love. I think it is more than fair to say that Elise is Lin Shaye’s most awesome role.
I wondered how the Insidious franchise would carry on after they killed her off in the first movie, but they have actually handled it very well. Insidious: The Last Key may be the fourth movie, but this is set before the events of the first two movies and after the third. It really dives into Elise’s backstory and shows what her childhood was like.
The opening scene showing a young Elise and how her father reacts to her “gift” is pretty heartbreaking and scary stuff and one of the highlights of the movie for me. It also shows why she is so determined when it comes to helping people.
Elise is joined by her two “assistants” Specs and Tucker. I love these two guys and honestly, I am surprised there is not some kind of Specs and Tucker spin-off in the works. Elise gets a message from a man called, Ted who is experiencing some weird stuff in his house. His house just so happens to be the same house that she grew up in.
Once she arrives back in her hometown, she meets her nieces, one of which has the same gifts that she does. Her brother is still mad with her as he feels that he abandoned him when they were children. Seeing Elise interact with her nieces is really cool and adds another dimension to her and makes you like her even more. It also opens up the door for movies to be about her niece as well.
Of course, Ted was not acting alone and there was a more sinister reason for her being brought back to this house. The main villain of the movie is an entity known as Key Face and Key Face is one of the more horrific entities in the whole Insidious franchise. I am trying my best not to spoil things too much, but the whole movie revolves around Elise, her mother, and her childhood.
Insidious is full of scares and as soon as Elise, Tucker, and Specs get to her childhood home the whole movie has a real uneasy and unsettling feeling to it. Insidious: The Last Key is more than just about making you scared. It is fleshing out this world and it keeps you guessing as to what is going to happen the whole time.
Insidious: The Last Key more than holds its own and while it may not be my favorite movie in the franchise. Insidious: The Last Key is still a fun roller coaster of a ride. I, in particular, love the way that it fleshes out Elise’s backstory and while this is a prequel and Elise is “dead” now. It opens up the door for more movies in the future.
