Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey

I was all in on Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey and thought that it sounded like such a fun and crazy idea! I love horror movies and I like the Winnie the Pooh franchise so I thought that there was a ton of potential for a crazy blood splattering movie. It is the kind of thing that just sounds so insane, but I was certainly not the only one who was excited to see what this was going to be all about.

The Game Review

As the release got closer and closer, my excitement only grew and I was certain that I was going to love this movie. We saw what the characters would look like in the movie and I was even more all in. I get that they have a kind of low budget look to them, but in this dark, twisted, and demented version of The 100 Acre Wood, I think the designs are great.

The Premise and Plot

Then the movie came out and…. It sucked. I really, really did not like this movie. The best thing about Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey is the storybook style intro. I thought that was done really well and at that point, I was still certain that this was going to be a movie that I thought was awesome.

The story at first is the typical story of Winnie the Pooh and his friends. Christopher Robin is friends with Pooh, Piglet, and Eeyore, but he eventually grows up and is going to university. Now, you may notice a name missing from that character lineup, Tigger! Well, at the time Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey was made, Tigger was not yet in the public domain so they were not able to use him in the movie.

Pooh and friends were devastated that Christopher Robin left them and there was a really brutal winter, leading to them starving! The way that they survived was that Pooh and Piglet ate Eeyore. This led them to become crazy and revert back to a more animal kind of state, saying that they would never talk again.

The Bloody Twist

Five years later, Christopher Robin returns to see his old friends and introduces them to his fiancée Mary, excited to introduce her to his friends, but they are mad, kill her, and then take Christopher Robin to torture! We then have a group of young people, none of whom are likable, heading to the 100 Acre Wood…. they then get caught up in this nightmare of a situation and have to fight for their lives against Pooh and Piglet.

Final Thoughts

You know, as I was writing that I was thinking, “maybe I need to give this movie another shot” as it still sounds awesome and so much fun. However, I have actually given this movie three chances and I have liked it less each time. It is not the low-budget feel of the movie, I kind of dig that to be honest with you. It just takes itself way too seriously and it is kind of boring.

We do get a decent amount of gore and violence, but I think this could have been done with a bit of Freddy style humor and not have taken itself so seriously and it would have been all the better for it. You have no idea how much I have wanted to not just like, but love this movie each time I have given it a chance, but I am always left disappointed. Still, I give Rhys Frake-Waterfield a blood soaked high five for having the imagination to come up with an awesome and crazy concept like this.
