With Five Nights at Freddy’s being under the Blumhouse banner, I had pretty high hopes for it. For me the biggest problem, Five Nights at Freddy’s had was that 2021’s Willy’s Wonderland pretty much stole its thunder and I am going to say this right off the bat, is a much better movie than this.

The Movie Review
Personal Perspective on Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie
I do not think this is a terrible movie and perhaps the fact that my knowledge of the games is just what my son has told me made it more tolerable for me. My son is a big fan of the games and he said that the movie was ok. He said he would have preferred it was rated 18, even if that meant he could not have seen it in the theatre.
Synopsis and Critique of the Plot
The plot of the movie is pretty decent. We have Josh Hutcherson playing the role of Mike. Mike is the carer for his younger sister, but he ends up in some trouble and has to take the job of the night security guy at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. I am sure you know the gist of what Five Nights at Freddy’s is all about, killer animatronics come to life and start murdering people.
However, there is actually a bit more depth to the story than that. I do not want to go into spoilers, but there is child abduction and murder at the root of all this and it is pretty horrific and grisly stuff. The thing is, it is horrific and grisly in that we hear about it as the movie is not quite as brutal as I would have liked it to have been.
Casting and Performances Overview
The best animatronic kill that we get happens right at the start of the movie. It completely sucked me in and I looked at my son and said this is going to be awesome. The thing is, it never reached those heights again for me. One way that I think Willy’s Wonderland is a better movie is that Nic Cage and those horny teens only had to spend a single night three.
With the gimmick of Five Nights at Freddy’s being the security guard having to survive five nights, they were kind of forced to have the movie take place over the five nights. I truly think that this would have been a far better movie had it just been the security guy trying to survive over one night, but then it would not have been an actual Five Nights at Freddy’s movie.
The cast here does a decent job. Josh Hutcherson as the lead is good and when I saw the trailer for this drop. As well as the Blumhouse tag, Mathew Lillard and Elizabeth Lail being in the movie were also two things that had me excited and hopeful this would be good. Mathew Lillard is the best thing about this movie, you can tell he is having a great time here and he has a creepy vibe about him that I think he pulls off really well.
Final Thoughts and Home Release Anticipation
I would not say that Five Nights at Freddy’s is as terrible as some people are making out. However, unless when it is released at home we get some kind of rated R 18 certificate directors cut, it is not a movie I will be looking to add to my collection. My son who is a big fan of the games said it was just ok, but he has not once mentioned it again in the days since we saw it.
