2024 has been a solid year for movies and one of the more hidden gems of the year for me has to be Heretic. Brought to us by the team of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who you may know from A Quiet Place. Heretic is another fantastic horror movie from the studio A24, I swear that A24 are giving Blumhouse a major run for their money when it comes to my favorite horror movie studio. However, I do feel that A24 tends to go for a bit more of an “artsy” approach than Blumhouse does.

The Movie Review
Heretic is a movie that you have to go into as blind as possible! The premise of the story is that we have two Moron girls called Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton and they are trying to share their religious views with anyone who will listen. Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton knock on the door of a man called Mr. Reed who they hope to convert to their Mormon beliefs.
It takes no time at all for them to realize that the sweet and charming Mr. Reed is not what he seems and they end up in a cat and mouse game where he is going to test their faith as he shows them what he really thinks of organized religion. I am not going into any more details than this about the plot!
Hugh Grant Shines as Mr. Reed
Hugh Grant as Mr. Reed is amazing! He is your typical charming and very sweet Hugh Grant, but his dark and evil side is truly amazing! I would put this up there as one of the best Hugh Grant performances of all time! You truly believe that he 100 percent believes in everything that he says and does and that is what makes him such a bone-chilling character to watch!
Hugh Grant is one of those actors that I have come to appreciate more and more over the last few years. Just look at him in Paddington 2 and The Gentlemen and you will see what an amazingly diverse and talented actor Hugh Grant is! I always used to just think of him as the charming English guy in rom-coms in the 90s and early 00s which he was great at, but he is so much more and this movie is a prime example of that.
Stellar Performances by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East
Now, Hugh Grant is awesome, but as a huge fan of Yellowjackets, it was so awesome to see Sophie Thatcher here as Sister Barnes, and Chloe East was also fantastic as Sister Paxton. There was also another actor in the movie that I am a big fan of and I had no idea they were in the movie so that was pretty cool. The acting in the movie is very believable and I truly did fear for the lives of these two young women and I had no idea how the heck they were going to get out of this situation.
A24: Reinventing Horror with Style
With so many big movies in 2024, I hope that Heretic does not get lost in the shuffle. For me, A24 movies tend to pick up steam thanks to word of mouth and I see this being the same way. My theatre actually had this on way longer than I thought it would and it appears to have done very well. I had a fantastic time watching this and I am pretty excited to see it again when it is released for home viewing which I think is before the end of 2024.
