Obsession

Obsession was a movie that I was very excited to see, as I heard nothing but great things about it. Some people and reviews were even saying that this was the scariest movie in years! Well, that is awesome, so many people loved this, but for me, Obsession just did not click like that at all, and while I thought it was ok, I am still trying to figure out what people think was so great about it.

Where to Watch Obsession

The Movie Review

Predictable Twist and Lack of Real Scares

Again, I did not dislike the movie, and perhaps the hype had built up way too much by the time I saw it, so my expectations were unrealistic. Let me start by saying, I did not think that this was scary at all, and I had heard that it had this big twist, and I still do not know what the twist was!!! I thought that the way it ended was really obvious. Sure, it was well done, but it was not this big shock.

Bear and Nikki: The Premise at the Music Store

We have two main characters in Bear and Nikki, played by Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrettee. Bear and Nikki work at a music store with their friends, Carter and Sarah, and Bear has had a thing for Nikki for a long time, but he cannot build up the courage to ask her out. It is a very relatable premise to start things off with.

The Unlikable Lead Dynamic

Seeing Bear be so awkward and just flat out weird about this was hard to watch and not in a good way either. It kind of made Bear unlikable for me. Sure, I get we have all had crushes on people who do not like us back, but this was kind of brutal and not in a good, oh, I feel sorry for him kind of way either. I had a very hard time warming up to Bear, and it did not get any better as the movie went on.

The One Wish Willow and a Dark Turn

Nikki, on the other hand, is much more outgoing, and you kind of feel that she could have feelings for Bear. Well, Bear goes into this weird shop and finds a One Wish Willow, which is a little toy that supposedly grants someone who breaks it a wish, and of course, Bear wishes for Nikki to love him more than anything in the world. Again, this is relatable and something I am sure many of us have wished for or thought about in the past.

Well, the wish comes true, and Nikki becomes obsessed with Bear. Inde Navarrette is fantastic in this role and plays the role of an obsessed, psycho girlfriend very well. At first, things are great for Bear, but soon, Nikki’s becoming obsessed with him starts to take a dark turn. Both Carter and Sarah realize that something is wrong, and they think that Nikki is just insane and that she has a hold on Bear. There are some scenes where it is like the real Nikki breaks through, and this was pretty cool and interesting, making me wonder where it is all going to go.

Entertaining Moments vs. Over-the-Top Hype

To be honest, what you see in the trailer for Obsession is pretty much what you get. The movie is fine; I was entertained, and I thought that it had some creepy moments for sure. However, there was only one real jump scare that got me, and for the most part, I just thought that it was fine. Clearly, this is a me thing, as more people seem to love this movie than do not, so perhaps I do need to watch it again. But, I have to say, I have found it hard to have a civilized debate with people who love this movie as they just fail to accept that it does not click for some people and that they say those who do not like it simply do not “get it”.

Final Thoughts & Potential for a Sequel

However, after my first viewing of this, I just do not see how people are saying it is one of the greatest horror movies of the last decade. It is kind of annoying that I thought that both this and Hokum were going to be movies that I loved, and instead, I just thought that they were ok. Well, I can say that I did much prefer this to Hokum, so it does have that going for it. Also, I would love to see a sequel to this, to perhaps give more info on the One Wish Willow thing.
