I am a massive fan of James Wan’s Conjuring Universe so I was very excited for The Nun II. However, with that being said, if I were ranking The Conjuring Universe movies, The Nun would be at the bottom of my list. I liked The Nun, but it is my least favorite of all the Conjuring movies so far. However, The Nun II from the trailers looked pretty fun so I was pumped to check it out.

The Movie Review
Taking over directing duties for The Nun II is Michael Chaves and this would be his third movie in The Conjuring Universe. Taissa Farmiga returns as Sister Irene as does Jonas Bloquet from the first Nun movie. I am a big fan of Taissa Farmiga as she is awesome in American Horror Story.

The Chronology
The Nun II takes place after the first movie, Thinking that the demon was defeated, Sister Irene lives her life and is just trying to move on. She has befriended a young nun from the USA, Debra, who is played by Storm Reid. I like the pairing of Irene and Debra, they have great chemistry together.
The Demon’s Return
Word gets out that the demon was not defeated and it has been making its way across Europe killing as it goes. It is clear that the demon is looking for something and after the last killing of a Father, Sister Irene is sent to investigate. Sister Irene is asked by the Cardinal to go and find out what is going on as she is the only one to have dealt with this demon before and she has something “special” about her which may help.
A Haunting Investigation
Sister Irene and a stowaway Debera investigate what is going on. They are brought to a boarding school in France. Sister Irene is shocked to discover that Maurice is working here and she realizes that Maurice is possessed by the demon and the demon is using him to kill and move through Europe so that it can get its hands on some awesome powerful artifact.
The Thrilling Third Act
The Nun II did start off a little slow, but the third act is awesome. I would say that the whole second half of the movie actually is some of the best stuff that Michael Chaves has done in The Conjuring Universe. My wife with whom I watched the movie jumped out of her seat on two different occasions which I got a kick out of…. And one of the scenes also made me jump too.
Expanding The Conjuring Universe
One thing that The Nun II does very well is flesh out The Conjuring Universe a bit more. I love this stuff and the whole thing with Ed and Loraine Warren fighting demons is great stuff. Even with that being said, the ending of The Nun II is quite a few years away from The Conjuring 2 so I think we have at least one more movie to show what the demon was up to before encountering The Warrens in The Conjuring 2.
A Surprising Turn of Pace
I will admit that in the first ten minutes, I was a bit worried and thought that it was going to be another slow-paced thing like the original Nun. I was wrong, The Nun II does start a little slow, but once it gets going, it never takes its foot off the pedal. Plus, there is a cool mid-credits scene here that sets up even more stuff to come in The Conjuring Universe.
