This is the best movie theater experience I have had so far in 2025! I cannot remember the last time I had as wild an experience at the movie theatre like I did with A Minecraft Movie! Actually, I can. it was 2017’s Pokémon: I Choose You and people went nuts in the theatre when Charizard came on the screen. It is very fitting that it was another video game adaptation that got a similar response.

The Movie Review
A Film Tailored for Minecraft Enthusiasts
Let me get this out of the way, the reason I think this movie is getting panned by the “real” critics is that they are not familiar with Minecraft. This is a movie that is made for those of a certain age who grew up playing Minecraft. I did not hand out questionnaires, but I would say early teens to early 20s seemed to be the average age at the packed theatre I was in. Of course, there were families with younger kids and oldies like myself, but this is a movie that clearly had a target audience.
Jack Black Shines as Steve
While I am older, my son grew up in the Minecraft boom, so it is something I am very, very familiar with, and honestly, they nailed this movie! Jack Black (Goosebumps (2016), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), its sequel Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)) as Steve is hilarious, and the meme worthy stuff that he constantly says during the movie had people around me in stitches and cheering the whole time. It was such a fun experience and one that I will probably remember forever.
A Simple Yet Entertaining Plot
Now, as an actual movie that stands on its own, A Minecraft Movie is ok. We have our core group and to be honest, Jack Black and his pet wolf are who I would say are the main characters. Some of the other “main characters” here you could take out, and the movie would honestly not suffer one bit for it. I did think that there were some things missing that I thought for sure would be in the movie, but this made a ton of cash on the opening weekend, so there is no way that this does not get a sequel.
Steve Leads the Group to Safety
Jack Black’s Steve needs to lead these four people who have found their way into the blocky Minecraft world to safety. It is far from being a “deep” movie, but anyone who expected anything other than what we got with this movie was either delusion or had no idea what Minecraft was in the first place. This is not an amazing movie, but if you are a fan of Minecraft, I do not see there being any way that you will not have a whole lot of fun with this.
A Movie for Fans, Not Casual Viewers
Now, despite all that praise, if you were to just go and see this on a whim because you like Jack Black and think the movie looks funny, I am not sure it is going to be something that you love. The Super Mario Bros Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog movie were movies made for fans of the games, but I feel that anyone could enjoy them; that is not the case with the Minecraft Movie. This is 100 percent for those who are already huge fans of the game.
Final Thoughts on A Minecraft Movie
If I am being honest, my high rating for A Minecraft movie is probably more to do with my experience than the movie itself. However, you cannot fake all the smiles and laughs that I saw and heard coming out of the theatre, so despite what the “real” movie critics will say, I think that A Minecraft Movie was a huge success. However, I am very interested to see how much I like it when I watch it again at home.
